What's the best type of eyeglass frame for billiards?

Ok, to be more serious, there have been a number of threads about billiard glasses. Those are the type of glasses Dennis Taylor wore in real matches. They are taller and the focal point is set higher so when you are bending over the table you are staring through the best focus part.

However, I wear glasses and I don't wear billiard glasses. Five years ago I went to the glasses store and had to look hard for glasses I liked that would be ok for pool. That is because back then narrow glasses were the fashion rage. I'd put them on, lean down over a table in the glasses store and realize I'd be looking completely over the lenses when shooting pool. I did find a pair that worked well.

As of 2015, larger glasses (80's style or nerd style) are the fashion rage. I bought new glasses from Lens Crafters six months ago and had no problem finding a pair I liked that worked well for pool.

These work pretty good.

You have to get your scrip in the states. Call them in Canada and they will have you take one additional measurement.
These are very good, I used them for a year or so. However after hearing countless times: "Hey man, your glasses are upside-down" I went to the doctor and had lasik correction.

Contacts. It's the only way to go, IMHO.

Bingo. We have a winner. Try them. I don't care what your eyeglass prescription is. They do amazing things with contacts nowadays. Go see your eye doctor now. Contacts will change your billiard life. It is a the proverbial silver bullet.

This. During my 10 or so year hiatus from pool, age caught up me and I had to get glasses for distance vision. When I started playing again, I looked over my glasses while down on a shot and everything past arm's length was blurry. I went and got contacts just for playing pool. I told the doc what I needed them for, and he prescribed the same focus for both eyes because so I wouldn't lose depth perception (normally with contacts they focus one eye for up close and the other eye for distance, but I didn't want to shoot pool like that). Which means when I'm wearing mine I can't read or see up close, but a $3 pair of readers takes care of that.

I'm corrected better than 20/20 in both eyes with contacts....but yeah, gotta wear reading glasses when I have them on. I'll never need reading glasses without them in (so my doctor says) but middle age is finally catching up with my eyesight. I've been wearing contacts for 25 years, and I just started needing the readers last year.

At this point, I refuse to play without them, no matter what glasses I have. I carry some backups contacts in my case.

I ended up getting a pair of the billiard glasses from Curran Optical in PA. These are the ones Jerry Forsythe wrote about here on az. I think the story is still accessible on the az opening page.

My eyes are pretty beat up but these def help and Bill Curran is a great guy to deal with. They cost a little more than others but they are high quality, titanium frames and Crizal (sp?) glass.

You will need to see your optician and get a prescription for 2-10'.

Very pleased with the results.

best,
brian kc

What about the ones from up Quebec way? Dr. Harris, I believe.

I hate contacts because of my astigmatism. The only lenses I'll use now is cr39. I never realized how crappy polycarbonate is as a lens. The color correction on plain cr39 is outstanding compared to poly. It's almost as good as high index trivex. Thanks for the links guys. I'll look into them. Im trying not spend more than a bill on a set
