What's the Filipino version of the US Open, DCC, etc.?

I'd assume in a pool-crazy nation, there should be some major national tournaments that are equivalent to our biggest events. What are they? I never see any news item like "Orcullo beats Alcano to win 400,000 pesos in the Manila Open." What are the major events that happen every year there?

I was surprised to read (while wiki'ing manila) that basketball is considered the main sport of the phillippines. Pool barely gets a mention in the topic.

So, pretty much nobody can name a single major in the PI? Do they just travel elsewhere? No money for a big tourney there? They just stick to gambling and don't bother organizing anything with more than 2 players?

I wonder if there's a filipino AZB where they have thousands of players talking about pool in tagalog all day.

Freddie <~~~ will go with "gambling" as the best answer

good link freddie. freddy? freddie... yeah, freddy looks better. But reminds me of freddy krueger.

Looks like that filipino blog mentions pretty much all us events except the Tiger Cup 10-ball tour. Well, now I know one tour anyway. Go robocop~!

The World Pool Championships were held here for years, as well as the World Cup of Pool, both very big tournaments. The World Pool Masters and World Ten Ball (men's and women's) have all been held in the Philippines during the last five years.

On a given day, there is probably more action here than anywhere else on the planet. Big games occur on a daily basis; Ten Ball (a current favorite), Rotation, 9-Ball or Eight Ball. Among the very best players, One Pocket matches can occasionally be seen as well.

before, there were sponsored "open 9-ball tournaments" where the top caliber players join.
now, it's about "a vs. b, race to x with y-thousand pesos prize money."
