What's the lightest ferrule material? Is it much lighter than maple? Is it strong?

Thanks,

Unless you are breaking with the cue ... why use any ferrule at all?
That would be the lightest.

Some shots, while not break shots, need to be plenty firm, especially when playing 9 ball. Someone told me that playing like that without a ferrule will eventually lead to a crack in the shaft. Would putting a pad on the end of the stick eliminate this danger? If so, which pad would you recommend?

Saber T will be one of the very lightest...but honestly, cut about any ferrule down to 1/2" or less with a 5/16 i.d. hole and the differences in weight will be so small it'll make no difference.:)

Linen melamine is among the lightest...stays clean and is among the best playing too, IMO.
