iirc,,,there have been mention of some kind of epoxy pin(maybe it's kinda like gold's?) with a name that starts with "M" i think. is it a glass epoxy pin? can someone tell me about it?

epoxy pin

The pin you are talking about I believe was the result of experiments by NASA scientists. I think it is called "G10". I know that Richard Chudy uses this pin in his cues. If you enquire via his website contact Im sure he would be happy to tell you why he chose this material and youll get the whole story, I guarantee it.

yes i think that's it. i think from now on, i'll be ordering any cue i like with as little metal as possible, so the idea of a joey gold type pin or somesuch non metallic substance appeals to me.

do you happen to know if the pin is more available than just with chudy?

btw,,,i like your AKA.

Atlas Makes the G10 pin in black or natural. The atlas pin is 3/8-10, so any cuemaker should be able to make you a cue with G10. I've made cues with the original Cog pin and the Atlas pin, they both hit really good.

great...thx

I'm getting G10 3/8 7.5 in black this week.
The new ones supposedly have much more lateral strength that the old ones.
I might put one in a vise and deadblow hammer it just to see.

If you want a size other than 3/8-10, you can buy G10 in rod form and cut your own threads. The non-fire resistant varieties of glass epoxy rod are pretty reasonably priced. If you go this route, beware that the high glass content will tear up your cutting tools in short order. There are several cue-makers that make their own G10 pins.

I don't know about "M", but I think the "G" in G10 stands for Garolite. Spelling may be wrong, I'm just going by memory.

JoeyInCali, if you put it into a vice and give it a wack in the side with a hammer I almost guarentee it will break, Hit a steel pin with the same pressure and it will bend, so both pins will need to be changed. I guess what I'm trying to say is cues aren't make to take side hits. Take that same pin, get a 2x4 and beat the pin until it goes through the other side. I did that with a cog pin and it came out the other side with threads intact.

. What does driving a pin thru a board prove? Same with breaking them sideways. I, myself, would rather have a weak pin than a strong one. I would much rather replace a broken pin than a broken prong.

rhncue, Neither test proves a thing. My only point was that a side hit test on a g10 in a vice has nothing to do with how good it will be for a cue. Any other pin would not hold up to the same test.

I think you meant to respond to someone elses post. I never mentioned whacking anything with a hammer.

I can get that made for you in any thread count you want. Need a couple weeks lead time. I can beat the other prices out there too if you want at least 25 of them.

g10 pin

i just had one installed on my predator se4. To get rid of the uni-loc and big hunk of stainless steel on the end. Also put a 1" ivory joint on it.

does it have the same resonance as phenolic and other metal substitutes?

are there other pin substitutes besides the epoxy glass? i never heard of a phenolic pin. for me, the only reason i asked about the g10 or like is i don't want any resonating metal or resonating anything for that matter, in my cue.
