What's the "Sputnik" shot???

i wish i knew how to post a wei table.

ob close to corner pocket shallow reverse angle to cb. after pocketing ob the cb comes off the short rail about a foot and comes back to the short rail in an arc close to the first diamond . probably named sputnik because the cb comes back in an orbit somewhat.

Hmmm..... is this like an S-shot? if that's the case, then it's a type of a masse !

I hope bayawak (aka Tirador) can shed light on this since he suggested the "sputnik" shot is unique to Filipinos

I am waiting....

sputnik shot

i can't resist but to respond...

sputnik shot is not as what was described by gopi-1,,somewhat close to what was described by johnpt...

it's not a filipino shot or stroke either,,,

this is it: it's the type of shot where you get this kind of reaction from the QB--- an OB maybe about 3 inches away from the top rail and the OB close to the pocket, the QB is all the way down to the other end of the bottom rail somewhat no more than 5 inches from the cushion,,your next shot is on the other side of the OB -which is somewhere in the vicinity of the bottom rail where the QB is..you cut the OB and the cue ball does not go anywhere,it somehow lingers around the top rail leaving you a bad position for the next shot,,,that's the sputnik shot--it happens all the time even to pros.

I assure you if the OB is 5 inches away from the rail, it won't happen.

I'll try my best to explain it as clearly and as detailed as possible.
Try to picture the OB sitting in the middle of the end rail, an inch from
being frozen. The CB is behind the kitchen, right in the middle too. You hit
the OB half face, with a lot of top spin. The natural reaction of the CB
should be:

hit the end rail and bounce off, hesitate, then back to the end rail again.
This sequence can happen 2 or 3 more times, depending on how hard you
hit the shot.

... and like what I said earlier, it IS a Filipino term for this kind of shot,
where and when it was coined, I have no idea...

Then it is a carom. it is pretty much used in rotation. takes a lot of confidence in taking a shot like that. it's kinda difficult to think coz most American players would not consider that type of shot, being risky and all, and just contented on playing safe or the normal pool sequence.

That's the one. The CB's action/reaction can happen 2 or 3 more times
depending on how much speed you hit your shot.

I think that's called a banana shot at snooker, for the bend.

At carom, it might be called a "force follow, double the rail" shot. And while it's harder, it can be done with the object ball five inches from the rail, or maybe even a foot with a silicone assist.

In Pinoy speak, a "Sputnik" will do you 2 more CB loops, but if the OB is 5
inches way from the rail, you can only do 1 or 1 1/2, possibly 2 were the CB
just barely dying frozen or close to the rail...

sputnik is not an intentional shot

rather it is an unintentional outcome of the cutting a ob close to the pocket and the cb being almost close to the bottom rail and your next shot is - you have to get down to the bottom rail again for a good position for the next ob.

gop1 was saying qb 5 inches away from the rail - you can get down to the bottom rail---that is the object in fact ---but i do not know if you ever experience this when shooting this type of shot--many times the cb just kindof masse around the top rail...as i have said even pros have suffred this effect before....

but sputnik- is never an intentional shot or even a shot--as i have said it is a unintentional action of the cue ball leaving you a bad position for your next shot.

there is a shot like that in trick shot or even carom..but that is never referred to as the sputnik ...

Not true.. I've used this shot intentionally lots of times to hold the cue ball on that rail for position..

Danny Diliberto calls this the High Karate...:D :D :D

No, Hail.. He is referring to what Danny D. calls the "High Karate".. He's talking about where force follow on a ball close to a rail will cause the cue ball to loop back to that rail and die...

I don't think this shot is purely unintentional. what if the player wanted to carom another ball but must used a lot of english to accomplish that? can you still call that as unintentional? there is always a possibility that it can happen since you manipulate the CB movement. I believe it doesn't necessarily be a full loop but also a semi curve.
