Whats with all the clapping?

I laugh a little bit also when i watch those types of matches....They can clap all they want as long as there is pool on TV anyway right? lol...

I'm guessing that the clapping is a way to break the silence. That will make it much more interesting to the casual channel surfer. This is something they do with poker on television as well because without that there is no way people would watch a group of dudes playing cards.

In no way was this thread meant to bash the WPBA. I'm a supporter of anything that is trying to promote pool in a positive light and I watch the live stream of the WPBA whenever possible. My point was that the older tapings did not promote this forced excitement and I thought that ESPN had brought on the clapping to make it more enjoyable to watch. I was simply stating my opinion that I did not find it anymore exciting and quite annoying. I have a hard time believing that the ladies enjoy a round of applause after they blew a safety to lead to an easy run-out.
You have to be careful when stating opinions but then again it doesn't matter. You will
get bashed by somebody no matter what you say. Keep on posting and you see.

P.S. This clapping drives me nuts too.

I have noticed this also on the tv events. I find it nearly intolerable, and I am not sure how anyone can defend it. It completely cheapens the value of a good shot. Clapping for a professional to make the most menial of shots is almost demeaning to the professional, and it makes the crowd look foolish. They should stick with clapping for above average shots or game winning shots only.

Agreed! I usually listen to music with the matches on video, especially those with that guy who keeps giving the women bad racks. The incessant applause (same crowd who applauds the bowler's 5-pin spare?) is really annoying. Accu-stats has spoiled us completely. TV in any of its forms can't match up.

mild form of sexism?????

I have to admit I have thought the same thing many times. Why would you clap every time a professional makes a simple shot? In my mind it is kind of demeaning to the women players. I can't ever recall the continuous clapping in a televised mens match.(why is this?) I know it is some form of support however if I was playing I personally would appreciate the clapping after a great shot or after I ran out the entire rack, not after basic shots I expect to make almost every single time.

This has always been in the back of my mind when watching a wpba televised match.

clapping at espn televised pool events is like the weather in new england. you can complain about all you want, but you cant change it. if you find it irritating thats just the price you have to pay to see pool on tv. there is no other way to generate crowd enthusiasim in the current format. as for clapping when a "simple" shot is made, have you ever missed one of those? ever seen a pro miss one? sure you have. at the challenge of champions and the tournament of champions Frank the mc/ref gave the crowd the following instructions: clap when you see a good shot, and you know what this is a hard game, they are all good shots". kinda goes along with the "there are no easy shots in pool" philosophy.

I don't have any investment in this changing in the future I was just commenting how this is something that has always struck me as funny. If the crowd is instructed to clap after every shot then this is how it is.

Although if I was watching my buddy play in the finals of a tournament I would not clap after every single shot he made. It is kind of ridiculous to distract a player in a middle of a run. Why not clap when they run out or after a great or exceptional shot. It just seems more appropiate.

The most curious thing about this is it is only wpba matches. Whenever I have seen mens televised matches the audience does not clap after every shot.....

the problem is that there are pple in the audience who dont understand what an exceptional shot is. also when you are at a tourney that is not being televised (for espn) there is no consideration to making the match seem exciting to the home viewer. mostly men havent had too many events (no tour) of late produced for/by espn. watch the international tournament of champions (sometime in december) and you'll see plenty of clapping on every shot.

Yeah I understand what you are saying. I guess the reality is the majority of the ESPN target audience has no idea what a hard shot or run out is anyway. The pool playing community should be happy it has the air time it does have and hope for more. Maybe one day the audience will be more pool educated because it has become more mainstream. We can hope....

I still think its silly to clap after someone makes a ball in hand shot.

Dudman, there are many of us that find it ridiculous and demeaning. For those of you that care to read some more recent threads on this topic.....

The Clapping doesn't bother me at all. I have seen many matches that involve it.

What does bother me is 1 or maybe 2 women fans scream to their top of there lungs, very loudly and high pitched... that can be very annoying. I have heard it in a few matches with Ga young and Jasmine, must be a faithfull fan, but I wish she would turn it down a couple notches.

I don't mind the clapping on a great shot, getting position on a hard shot, etc..

But when everyone claps after a missed shot, missed shape, made shot with terrible shape, etc....

Its gets really rediculous.

I have way too many good matches to watch on VHS and DVD to watch that kind of pool.

Sorry, just my opinion.

What does it profit a man (sport) to gain the whole world and lose his soul? Or what shall a man exchange for his soul?....Go figure! :-)

OP, I know, the public reaction at sports events is sometimes seriously annoying!!! Its like the PGA tour where every single putt some guy yells "Get in the hole!!!!!" Get in the hole??? how hilljack is that? I can see the guy with the budweiser in hand stumbling around from green to green yelling get in the hole. I want to tell the guy to shut the heck up!! :grin-square: Im a little OCD I guess.

Trying to generate excitement for the camera.

Have you ever watched Wheel of Fortune. They clap when the wheel spinning.

How about those laugh tracks on the sit coms? Someone walks into the room and you here that laugh track. The sit down, laugh track.

Turn off the sound and watch any sporting event and it seems boring. We have become conditioned to sound or noise no matter how rediculous.
