Tips

For the last two years, I have been shooting with a Sniper Medium and love the hit. Recently, I have tried and like alot, the Kamui Black (Soft). Really nice hit, grabs well; however, one has to used to the height of the tip.

I'll let you know how the Kamui works out.

Shot with Triangle mediums for over 20 years...would do so again, never had a bad one. Now I'm hooked on Milk Duds. Am about to try a Kamui Black Soft to see what all the fuss is about (I ordered it on a Gulyassy SPTX shaft I'm giving myself for Christmas). :D

tiger onyx and kamui black soft

have a kamui black soft on my 314 shaft and a tiger onyx on the z2 i thibk i prefer the onyx.

I can use either Triangles or Le Pros. Realize that some batches are defective. Because those tips are inexpensive I always buy several boxes with each box bearing a unique lot number. I usually end up trashing whole boxes of defective tips but the really good ones are superb.

I install by hand. To center the tip on the ferrule I place a 14mm tip in the bottom of a six sided 14mm socket. The tip fits the socket snugly. I'll use blue painter's masking tape around the cue shaft so that the shaft end fits snugly also. After the glue is set the overhang is trimmed with a utility knife. Most people screw up by holding the tip crown down against a table when trimming so that the tip won't come off or spread like an accordion. I trim the overhang with a whittling motion and observe the tip sides to look for possible spreading. If I see spreading I cut the tip off and try another.

The best tip is the one you like on a particular cue.
For any one cue, not everyone will like the same tip.
The list of favorite tips is as vast as there are tip makers and the variations that they make.

I have been using a new tip to hit the market. Black King Tips.
I put on a soft and have been playing with it for a couple of weeks now.
It has not mushroomed and have not had to reshape it.

Absolutely the nutz. See the Black King reviews in the Ask the Cue Maker forum.

Up until I put on the Black King, I was using a Piecost.

Tad layered medium. It holds chalk well, lasts a long time, doesn't glaze, and is extremely low maintenance (but soft tip lovers probably won't like the hit).

I'm also using the new to the market Black king tips. Love the hit and feed back with the med. I added them to my inventory and customers love them. TY Frank

Kamui "soft" ???

I noticed many players like myself go with med tips...but strangely everyone that mentions kamui says kamui "soft"...that begs the question...does a kamui soft hit like a Moori med ???

And who is Triumph??? Never heard of it, but seems to have some supporters? Is it layered?

KEEP EM COMING !!!!!!!! THIS IS GOOD STUFF

Yep Sporty. I also put a medium on my other sneaky player and love that one just as much. I will also be adding more to my tip inventory soon.

Been getting pretty good feed back from the few that I have installed for people as well.

I am hoping that eventually I can cut back on a bit of tip inventory and start installing the Black King exclusively.

I also am getting a few of Dawg's Duds shortly. I make my own but I don't make them consistent enuff to sell them.
They are just for me anyway and something to play with and were never meant to be for sale.
But, when I do make one that works, they play like magic.
Dawg's tips get pretty decent reviews from folks that have used them. If you have never tried a Dud, at least try one once in your playing career. Just so you'll know. I hear he has a back log and can barely keep up with orders so might tell you something right there.

There are a couple of people that like Duds around these parts so thinking that I will have to add some of Dawg's to my inventory too.

Tried a few different tips lately just trying to find the right one.
Kamui black ss...too soft. Then went to kamui brown soft and liked it. It mushroomed a little but after shaping, the feel was there. So I got another kamui brown soft for my other shaft and it was soft like my original black ss. Hated it too. Went to moori v and it was as brick...too hard. Then tried a kamui black soft and like it. Thats a chunk of change to find the right 2 tips.

So here is another question, with the inconsistency from tip to tip in each brand/category, why don't people who sell tips (your fav .com) measure each tip with a shore a durometer so you can order a tip that has an exact measurement of 70 for example. Is this feasible? Sorry to hijack this thread but think it is relevant.

Tropheus,
I think ur exactly right, how in today's modern age of technology do we "still" have "bad batches" ... I mean, if a pool player can put a tip on and determine that it's bad, how can it leave the factory??? How can they not test these tips? It's like a cue maker not caring about which piece of wood he makes his cue out of? Ridiculous!!! Lol, imagine cue maker saying...oh well, made a bad batch of cues this year, had some rotten wood, lol

I used LePro for years. Tried a bunch of others, but always came back to LePro. Then, when I started getting some bad ones, I tried a Triangle and loved it. That's what I stayed with until the layered tips came out.

I can't say that any layered tip is better than a good Triangle. But, the best of the layered ones require so little maintenance, I have stayed with layered.

There are a lot of fine layered tips. The original Moori Med was outstanding. But Everest tips are as close to a Triangle as anything, with the benefits of a tip that requires next to no attention.

I have settled on Tiger's Sniper. I love the feel--it's soft on soft hits, yet firm on hard hits. Pretty amazing. It holds chalk superbly and you can pretty well bet that if you miscue with a Sniper, you made a lousy stroke. I haven't tried the Onxy yet, but will if I ever wear out the Sniper I have on my shooter.

I did try a Kamui Black Soft. Very nice tip. Excellent feel and hit. I could use it and not miss the Sniper, but I would not say the Kamui is better. In fact, they play similarly, but feel a bit different.

If Jeff missed any, you can also go to Muellars site. They have a list of tips that they rated.

You can see that there is a variance between ratings. Where as a Talisman M is the same durometer rating as a Black King H.

Still, a little trial and error for one to find the tip of your choice. Might be slightly costly at first but when you do, its magic.

Might even be slight variances within a box of even good quality tips. Within reason of course. Even with good quality tips, you might get a few duds within that box. If you don't you're lucky.

I have also had good luck with both Talisman S and M.

Wizard is a also a decent tip. I don't have any experience with the original Mooris but I have read on here that some people have compared the Wizard with the original Moori.

Some folk like the Tiger Emerald. The first time I put one on, I absolutely hated it. I had it on a production cue that I couldn't hit a pocket with if my life depended on it.

I decided to give the Emerald a second try. I put one a better cue and one
on my buddys cue. He loved it and it was also a world of difference for me too.

So, theres proof, for me anyway, that a tip can vary between cue to cue or shaft to shaft.
Would you agree with that?
