Inside english, play for the over cut at worst on the 3 while trying to make it, have enough speed to NOT lay up on the 7 while playing shape for the 4 making SURE you don't go below the 4 with your speed.

Pocket 3, come back down table outside the 8, play safe. Very small chance of leaving yourself safe and there are a variety of safes available depending on whether the cue ball stops above or below the 4.

Other options, to quote Grady, are frought with danger.

I hit just a little too hard over a little too hard, and hit the bottom rail and then into 5. The 5 came open, and the cb ended up perfect on the 4 to the corner for the out. I got a little lucky on this one. But, I think this was the right route to go. You have several options, and they all give you a chance to do something with the 4. Using inside, I feel was too limiting.

Niel I like your route only if the side pocket does NOT come into play AT ALL, with the proper speed of your shot choice, allot of good things can happen. You moving into this pile of balls properly and even if you don't get a good shot on the 4, you have allot of blockers down there to shoot a 4 ball saftey. The way I chose from your diagram kept you in shape on the four, for almost four feet with the 7 the only Hook concern. If this table is wet, I would definintely have taken your route, but a dry table allows the player to control the cue ball squirt allot better and REMOVES the scratch completely with this offense shot.

This is plenty. They don't need to be grandiose. You already see a couple of pages of responses, and though many were similar, it generated discussion of the best route to take and why.

This stuff might be simple to you and many others here, but understand to some of us this is great stuff. Not just the original shot, but the discussion it generates about how and why.

I'd weave around the seven going three rails into the four, hoping to clip it. If I miss there is still viable options...and I still get to swing at it. The only problem ball is the 7 if you run into it because the 9-5 diminishes your landing zone. If you happen to miss the 4 ball hitting the 9, 5, or 6, you'll still be ok because they are not laying bad.

With a little left - escape the side and wind up below the 4 for a shot or safety
