Just curious why nobody took his action? But you are right about guys going off. In my dad's pool room,(30 years ago) most of the guys weren't happy until they lost everything. I know it sounds stupid, but these guys basically gave their money away in pool games or at the ponies. As fast as they could make it they could not wait to piss it away. Obvioulsy, there were plenty of guys that wanted to win and did win because they were calculated gamblers. Only bet when the game was in their favor. But the degenerate gamble is a weird kind of sickness because they get the thrill from the action, not from winning the money.

Nope I just tried to get people to think! Gambles for the most part have little to show for their years of winning! Think Again!
I like to gamble when I play pool, but I also will play someone who doesn't to get in some practice, and I play in a lot of local tournaments. I started out playing 9 ball for quarters in the 60's and later in the 80's learned to play some 1 hole usually for $10 or $20 a game. Then I started playing in tournaments mostly but still gambled some and sometimes bet on the side while a friend of mine played. I just love pool. Its my hobby. I like to watch it, play it, bet on it, whatever. Been doing it a long time.
Here's what really ticks me off the most, although sometimes its kind of humorous. I'm a fairly decent player. I've won my share of the local tournaments. The guys that won't bet that water's wet that I play just to get some practice in, play me like their life depends on them winning. A lot of times when I play them, I'm trying something new or working on a specific part of my game so I am not focused on doing what it takes to win the game or set. Then when they do win, and its not often, its like they hit the lotto or something. I never say anything but nice game or something similar cause it is good practice, and some of those guys don't play bad, but they're so tight with their money they squeak. Like I said, it just irritates me, and they know it, and they love it!

Who're you telling? most of the top pros in the world aren't exactly rolling in dough either. i don't play because i think it's going to make me rich one day. i love the game and i like to get something for my efforts when/if i win.

I was at a bar last week having some fun just playing and some arrogant man with a mustache came along talking about how he only plays for money making sure his cue case was visible... and well, I left... Honestly it may have been easy money but I really don't care to know either way because I simply play to win. Money isn't a silly thing to be tossing around; it's the reason Greece has been on fire for the last year and why people in Haiti have next to nothing. It especially shouldn't be wasted over a stupid bet over who's going to legally sink the 8-ball or 9-ball first... Furthermore, if you know you're going to win then that's not gambling that's called stealing, which is completely despicable and pathetic to say the least.

if you say so. there's nothing wrong with being in a game that's so good you're stealing. you think that guy that's desperate to give you his money's going to go put it in his kids college fund or something? he's going to lose it to someone and that someone might as well be me/you or anyone else that has enough sense to take it
Then I guest I am one of those people. I do not gamble, I feel it cheapens the game on the whole. It drive away ANY mainstream sponsors and make our sport looks like you have to hustle to make a living. I can't tell you how many time I have sat in a room and watch an A or A+ player dump game to a D or C only to keep the money flowing. I prefer tournaments, since MOST of the time you know you are getting their best game. Win or lose, I can live with that. But don't make me think I have a chance when I don't.
not really man. the numbers don't lie. if you're losing most of the time it's time to adjust or quit. nothing wrong with it. you took your shot and lost. just take it back to step 1. hit the practice table and come back when you think you're ready

I don't know what to say to this......it sounds just so....unbelievable...it could be from GWB or Obama.....no way of telling. In any event, there is a good possibility that it is just about the dumbest thing I will read on this forum.

The idea that if someone doesn't want to gamble (which is, as it so happens, ILLEGAL in many (most?) places, he or she should stop spending money in a public recreational facility, thus depriving its owner(s) from profit (presumably) and reducing the possibility of gainful employment for others.....all because of some ill-conceived notion of.....what....it is hard to say.

it's illegal. who cares? i know i don't. so is talking on a cell phone while you're driving but i see cops doing that all the time. i'll start giving a damn about the law when it starts to apply to everyone the same way

A lot of people do. Just because you choose to ignore the law doesn't mean everyone else does, or should.
I never said I give a damn about the law. But some people do....usually not those in power though.
most people that play pool have gambled at it. if they haven't yet they probably will at one point or another.
why is it everyone wants to have some sort of nit picky problem with my thread. if it makes your ego feel better i could just tell you you're right and smarter than me. it seems like that's what you want to hear anyway.
you wanna get better you're going to have to take your game serious enough to risk something at some point.
