did eddie pay bert??
did eddie go to work for bert??
did eddie supplant fats as "the man" at benningtons?
your thoughts

It's hard to imagine Eddie working for Bert. Possible ways out:

- Eddie finds a bigger and better backer than Bert in another city
- Eddie finds a way to play/gamble for his freedom

If you believe the Color of Money, though, Eddie refuses to pay and ends up quitting competitive pool altogether.

I preferred the movie ending of The Hustler over the book ending.
I much preferred the Color of Money book over the movie.

In the Color of Money book Eddie specifically says:

That said, you could argue that it is not a completely faithful sequel and that we shouldn't assume that the Color of Money directly follows from the events of the Hustler.

Clearly the movies are very different.

As much as I like the novel, I have always preferred the short story that was published in Playboy back in 1957.

I think broken thumbs would have been a 'best case scenario' at the end of the story.

Probability lies somewhere closer to this Im betting.... :p

Then I am puzzled, since the book 'the Color of Money' makes it clear that Eddie walked away from the game until that generation of gangsters dies out. Fats is instrumental in getting Eddie back to playing 20 years and, if I recall, is the one who told him that it was now safe.
