When Did It All Begin?

How old were you when you first started playing? Aside from some bumper pool in my single digit years, I think around 12 we started spending rainy days during the summer playing pinball or pool (8-ball) on a bar box at a bowling alley that was owned by my buddy's parents. We pretty much had the run of the place and that included the beer cooler. Not sure how none of us developed drinking problems.

· How old were you when you began taking the game seriously? I am not sure I ever have, at least by what most here would consider serious. I've gone through periods of playing a lot and would rather win than lose but can't say I've ever been motivated to practice a significant amount or study the game the way I have at times done for things like golf.

· How old were you when you realized you became pretty good? By age 15 I could beat pretty much any of the adults that showed up on league night....providing it was a bowling league:sneaky:. But there was no real pool scene where I grew up so any of us who played on that bar box for hours on end were "pretty good". Now, I'm just pretty good for a guy who doesn't take it seriously.

· How old are you now? 59

· How old were you when you realized you became pretty good? relative term- I'm better than the average bar banger, but nowhere near great. Started becoming proficient in bar tournaments and won one when I was 25 or so

On a different note, I wonder if anybody can recommend a good book about the history of pool- from it's origins to relatively contemporary times?

14 - Stopped by pool room walking home from school.

14 - Didn't take long to start playing for $0.25 to $5.00 a game

14 or 15 - Was starting to beat the older players at pool room.

72 and like the game nearly as much as I did at 14. Isn't pool great ?

Not sure, but sure did like to play. Played almost every day until I went into the service.
Probably around 22. Quit for 20 years when I was 34, job and family. Started playing again in '04.

I always took it seriously since I first saw a table. I started playing at home at 8 yrs old when my dad bought a new Brunswick 9 footer in 1960 (still have it) and always wanted to go to pool school when I was a kid. I still love and take it seriously but I haven't played regularly since my family sold our pool room in 2007. I need to get out and play..

Around 15, the manager of the pool hall would let us in if it wasn't crowded, minimum age was supposed to be 18.

Played daily from 19 until 22. then played occasionally for 20 years. Started playing regularly for 6 years then quit for 13 years. Started playing regularly again about 8 years ago.

I consider myself average, though my friends accuse me of having "flashes of brilliance"

I have been around awhile
