I've heard the topic of Tipping out the Tournament Director floating around for some time now. And most recently saw a post on another forum about it.

How often do you tip? What are the criteria you use, and how much?

Why would you not tip?

I'm interested in getting everyone's take on this.

PERSONALLY I WOULD NEVER TIP A TD who also was a Bar/Room Owner or Tournament Promoter!

I usually tip them $50 to $100

I always tip them $50 or $100. Do it before the draw, you want to get the most bang for your buck you can! No sense tipping them after the tournament, what service can they provide for you then?

I actually tipped Mike Janis 100 once. But it was because he toted me to a non-Viking Tour event that I ended up winning, so it was really more jelly, lol.

Can't really as a player see why I would owe a tip to the tournament director.

Wonder if Mike will ever be back on AZB?

Very doubtful. I think a lot of bridges were burnt, by all parties involved. Really too bad, as some of the more entertaining posters are no longer around. Not trying to pass judgment by saying that, just that some things around here seem kinda boring lately.

yeah, just in fun

More seriously, TIPS are "to insure prompt service". While I might toss something back when I cash it is purely a goodwill thing. Some folks tip everybody including the cop writing a ticket, I tend to tip who I feel is reasonable. The tournament director is normally getting paid well, I might tip if they did something a little above and beyond or just did an excellent job running the event. I'd be more likely to buy them a drink or a bite to eat.

I don't have much tournament experience, but I can't imagine ever "tipping" a TD. Unless it were meant as a veiled bribe, I don't see any reason to tip them. I do, however, always try to thank them and the staff. Sometimes I start by apologizing for chewing their ass the previous day before :embarrassed2:, but regardless there's a lot of work that goes into running a tournament. I pulled a TD aside one time and thanked him and he said it was the first time that had ever happened in his 10+ years running tournaments. I enjoy going to tournaments and I understand and appreciate all the work and headache they go through, so I try to give them a personal thank you.

just my 2 cents...

So, does that mean you would not tip a bartender who gave you good service at the bar, if you knew that he/she was also the owner? Or even if they waited on you out on the floor?

I wouldn't tip them. Some are making same as top 4 in the event. A tip is for service provided. As TD, it is there job to run the event and they take money for doing it!

In my experience when I was about 16 years old and first started playing little local tourneys. The house man who ran the tourney we would always throw like ten bucks if we took second and 20 if we took first. It was just a way of saying thanks for taking the time out to do us a favor and run the thing. Now as far as larger tourneys are concerned Im not sure never made it far enough to figure that out lol. I would imagine though that the same rule applies in poker ten percent. Again Im not sure I was just brought up in my pool life that you tipped the house man. It was simple as that.

I have recently started playing on the Joss, Tri - State, and Blaze Tour with every intention of starting up with the Predator tour here on the east coast as well. Each one of those tournament directors makes money hand over fist so who knows. I know one guy on one of those tours not mentioning who who takes out money from the calcutta just for running the calcutta.

In my experience though over all yes I would tip.

Have you ever run a tournament? Once you have, your no tipping policy would change. The TD works very hard, doing sign-ups, collecting entry fees, doing the draw, assigning slots on the board, keeping up with all the players, calling shots, settling disputes, assigning tables, and so much more. All that is done so that you and the other players can play pool and hopefully win some money.

If it weren't for the TD, there would be no tournament at all. If you win fifty bucks, why not throw five of it toward the guy (or girl) who worked to made it possible?

Well I have seen First Place Winner give a TD 20-40 Bucks when they win over 100-125 BUCKS.

Personally I think it is a nice gesture, but I personally have never TIPPED a TD, as I think most get paid for the job they do, and that is the money they agreed to take for the job being done.

IMHO TIPPING is out of control.

Some TD's fit into you catagory of being hard working, some other well?

If you want to feel sorry for a Professional TD think, Jay Helfert who a year almost after running a BIG Tournament is still trying to collect BAD CHECK from a Tournament Promoter who wrote RUBBER CHECKS to Jay, and the TOP FINISHERS!

I WORK FOR TIPS. WITHOUT TIPS I WOULD PROBABY BE VERY UNHAPPY IN LIFE. I TIP EVERYONE. I OVER TIP OFTEN. I TIPPED THE TOURNEY DIRECTOR LAST NIGHT. (EVEN THO THEY ROBBED THE PRIZE POOL AS USUAL) THAT EXTRA 3-5$ DEFF WONT BREAK YOUR POCKETS BUT IT SURE CAN HELP A PERSON HAVING A HORRIBLE DAY FEEL A BIT BETTER

WITH THAT BEING SAID YOU SHOULD TIP ACCORDINGY. IF THE SERVICE IS BAD THEY GET THE MIN 15% NO MATTER WHAT. I PERSONALLY WILL NEVER NOT TIP BUT IF THE SERVICE ID GOOD OR I LIKE YOU IVE TIPPED 50% AT TIMES. (10$ on maybe a 20$ CHECK)

TRUTH IS THE WORST JOBS ARE OFTEN THE LEAST PAYING. AND RATIO OF WORKTO PAY WAITRESS IS PRETTY BAD imo

not an obligation

Dave,

Let me say that I know and have known a lot of good people whose main living was tips. However 15% is not an obligation. I usually tip over that for good service, often getting into the zone that people find ridiculous when I happen to eat somewhere with cheap food. I feel that the wait person does just as much work and will never tip less than five dollars for good service even if I just ate a meal that didn't cost much more than that.

On the other hand, even in places where I am well known I have stood up and thrown a quarter on the table after getting poor service that was obviously the doing of the wait person. I feel it is unfair to good wait people and all customers to tip equally for poor service.

I actually object to the whole tip system as it has evolved. A tip is a gift and nobody should have to rely on gifts to make a living especially after they have worked a damned hard shift or double shift as many wait people do.

Taking this to TD's, as I said someone that goes above and beyond I tip. Someone that comes in purely as a paid TD, I'm not going to automatically feel the need to toss some money. They generally are paid pretty well. If they had to be called over to my matches a few times or did a little something extra, I'll tip even if they were paid well. Someone working for the house, I'll probably tip. The owner, depends. A wait person is performing a service for you. A TD is in many respects your boss at least while you are in the tournament. I am more likely to buy them a drink or a meal.
