When to avoid old tips?

Hello everyone,
What are your thoughts or principles on old tips as far as integrity goes. Do they deteriorate after x amount of years or get better like fine wine? This includes single layered tips like Triangle’s and layered tips. I’m talking about tips that is not installed. Was looking at some Triangle boxes and it’s was dated from 2004. I figured they get dried rot over time. How old is too old?

Can't answer for tips but with leather it think storage is the key, I have some leather pouches from WW2 and they are in excellent condition.
 
I bought a box of 30 Elk Master snooker tips back in the year 2005 or so. I live in a dry climate and they have not deteriorated. I still have a couple left to get me through to the year 2025.

Perhaps I just lucked out on a good box. I have no idea on other brands, hard/soft etc. I ‘ve had my current cue for 14 years and use just 1 type of tip. My cue and tip are like a familiar baseball glove...maybe not the best for everyone but familiar and feels right.

I also have a cue collection, I’ll mess around with a cue once in a while, might have had the tip on for 25 years. I don’t notice any issues. But, again dry where I live. We don’t get rust on cars or wood rotting.
 
I smoke cigars; they can last decades if stored in a humidor at proper temp and humidity. I have some cigars that are over 30 years old. Several years ago I got a lathe to replace tips. I store all my tips in a humidor. None have dried out.
 
I have tips over fifteen years old. Moori II's and Elkmaster are the ones I have used lately. They are in original boxes and those boxes along with similar things stay in a one or two gallon plastic jug that once held bungie cords. I too have seen zero signs of aging. The Elkmasters were sorted but not dudded. I think they play as well as my dudded tips. Elkmaster now offers sorted tips themselves. Makes me a little uneasy. Are the culls tossed in with the unsorted tips giving a higher percentage of inferior tips?

Anyhow, within reason, age alone doesn't hurt a tip. My opinion anyway and it seems to be supported by other replies.

I too smoke Cigars, just got two seals boxes rolled in 1993. Proper storage is key to most old things.🤣

Chris, I would gladly give you a few if I lived closer. They are Cubans that I got from a doctor I used to call on. You have been a champ to answer any and all questions I’ve had with my lathe. Thank you my friend.
 
Howdy All;

I have several Le Pros still in the box I bought them in back in 1979. For all appearances
they seem fine. Bought them in Va. Beach, Va. and they've followed me around to Ohio,
Ut. and now NM. Last one I replaced is still active and works like the ones I've used in the
past. Back then they made a good tip.
