When to draw the line with cue maker?

So, I sent Eddie Cohen 900 bucks May 15 2018, was told to expect 16 months delivery time. I'm checking in every 6 months and there's always a "reason" for delay. Even though I am fully aware that the deposit is final and not refundable, wouldn't y'all agree that it would be the right thing to do to pay me back my deposit when it's been 6 years? I don't even play anymore. :-(

(Edited, added the name.)

Some cue makers will take longer than others because of materials. They produce their own. Your cue maker is most likely growing the trees that are going to be in your cue. Did you know he was going to grow the woods that are going to be in your cue?

If you did t know then he should pay you back. Call them and ask for it back.

When you buy a custom, it's a commission. Same thing with the painter or sculptor. I think a lot of these guys overbook and take care of the "good" customers. Seems like human nature.

Well for example Southwest grows their own woods. It takes at least 15 years. Some of the people are no longer with us that is on their list and they don’t even know it.

I was thinking about putting my 4 year old nephew on their waiting list. If he shows interest in pool then he will have a cue right on time when he can legally enter a pool room.

As for you, yes you should be demanding your money back.

Did the price go up over the past 6 yrs too? I would’ve requested it back 4 yrs ago.

I'd have asked long before now. I can't believe the leeway some of these cuemakers get.

If this is the case then they shouldn't quote 16 months build time.

SW doesn't grow their own wood FFS

You got my vote for this being a totally unacceptable business transaction. If you only earned 2% on that $900 over the past 6 years that money would have grown by $114. A refund is already a loss.

1. Name the cuemaker. This helps people avoid being subject to the same BS in the future.

2. Demand the money back and cut him loose. There are a select few cuemakers that are worth waiting 5+ years for from a pure value perspective, and most of them don't take deposits up front, aren't taking orders, or both. If all this guy wanted was $900 in 2018, he probably isn't one of them.

No such thing as non refundable if they failed on their end. Would never hold up even in a small claims case. You would win in a court even though a contract said non refundable as they didn't hold up their part of the agreement. You would get your full money back.
Tough part is they are probably a long way to file a case against. You may be able to do it where you live though. You could also contact his local district attorney and file a complaint. If he tries to use an excuse that he has material costs doesn't matter as you can't be expected to finish the cue yourself. he would have to eat it, or sell to someone else.
Give him a deadline of say a month or so, and if not done you're filing charges for theft, then follow through with it.
Some cue makers are the worst, sort of the same as custom pistol smiths. If you were local and at their door every day, they would finish it, but in your case, out of sight, out of mind.
There are very highly respected cuemakers that finish cues as promised, and usually within a year to year in a half.

demand your money back or pictures of your cue in final stages. give him 48 hours. if he doesnt respond first tell him you are filling a report of theft. non refundable deposit doesnt mean they can steal it. it is theft plain and simple.
if you live within distance go to his house.

take it from there. you are never getting a cue from him.

hope you learned a lesson and never give but a nominal deposit.

A lot of you guys want me to name him, but I'll establish comms first, sent him a PM this morning (Sweden time) and he's in the US. I'll give him a day or so to respond. As to the filing theft charges and so on, it's doubtful, we're not even on the same continent. :)

I'll update when I know more, thanks for the input guys, appreciate it.

I will gladly admit that I've let this drag on way longer than it should have, I've been a very patient customer, just giving him a friendly question now and then about the progress. He's sent few pics, but I'm not even sure it was of my cue or just a similar looking one.
