When to pin?

How do you guys mate the shaft to the butt if you don't put the pin in until after the finish is started? You can't put the shaft on the butt nor can you put the butt onto a carbide.

Dick

Dick,

I bore and tap the hole in the butt for the pin after the final pass, then I use the male end of the sanding arbor in the butt and apply finish then sand. After the finish is sanded flush with the carbide arbor I remove the arbor, face and insert the pin. I do it the same way with the shafts. If you have TOP QUALITY sanding arbors they match right up.

Your arbor has no threads?
thnx

The arbor does have threads. The butt has been bored and tapped and I screw the arbor into the butt.

That would work except the arbor for the butt has downward angle ( on mine ) and the shaft is flat.
Thnx

I just measured mine and they are like yours. I knew that when I orderd them but had not thought about it since. We probably go them from the same place. I don't think I will change the way I have been doing them because they have been matching up nice. I guess I don't see how the .003" difference from front to back is going to make a difference in the final diameter when sanding. I could me missing something though and that would not be the first time.

Thanks,

Eric

I install my pins right before I do a final cut. I also recenter my centers in my pins before I do my final cut so this way my centers are true to the butt and the pin. I have found that this works best for me.

For me anyway, I never said that I started the finish before installing the pin.
In response to your question though, it all comes down to how precise your machining is. I don't use sanding mandrels either; I don't need them.

.840" is .840". If there IS a thou. or two discrepancy, it's easily compensated for in the finish.

I don't & won't teach someone to build cues. I'll offer assistance if someone is in need of an answer. Only KJ is qualified to build KJ Cues. The same is true for RHN Cues. Only RHN is qualified to build RHN Cues. Viva la difference.
