When you get rid of smoking....

Highrun55- that is exactly what happened to me. Once the smoking ban wen on in my city, I had to close the room in less than a year. The only reason why it stayed open longer that 6 months is, when I saw the handwriting on the wall I used to let my customers smoke after 10. I said what the hell, I'm going down anyway!

Usually you don't have the smell of drunks attached to your clothes the next morning so it is easily forgotten. Its a lot easier to avoid drunks than smoke in a closed space. How the bar has been affected by local laws determines the number of drunks in a place. Once they get the lawyers involved after a drunk crash, bars get nervous serving anyone more than a few drinks.

When Penna went non-smoking I lost all my younger nightly players as all the kids seem to smoke. Its been a year now and business has not recovered yet. Im just about done.

Last I knew the rooms I used to go to in Binghamton, Endicott, Syracuse, Albany, Utica, etc. were all still open, even after the smoking ban. Sorry you're not doing well, I don't understand, to be honest, why some make it and some don't with regard to smoking.

Pushout...Tap, tap, tap! I agree! While there are exceptions (including great room owners like Mickey/Highrun55) I think for the most part, it is more often poor ownership than outside influences (like smoking and drinking) that close poolrooms. jmo

Funny, the rooms in NYS got by for YEARS without alcohol. Now the same rooms get by without smoking. It's not the lack of alcohol or being able to smoke that closes pool rooms.

For the most part I can avoid drinkers by not playing pool on fri/sat nights.

I gave up the booze many years ago and have yet to get second hand drunk.IMO pool would thrive in the long run by dissociating itself from alcohol but in the meantime alcohol sales do support pool in many locations.

Common sense says you don't burn things indoors unless you need heat or light and for the most part humans have left that behind.
