One of the guy I play with once in in a while, while living in L.A. Area use to play in a lot of what I call PUSS Pocket Bar. He was always having his Cue, Cases, and stuff lifted when his back was turned.

He said he got tired of buying Good Cues to take to these place, so he had his MINIMUM Outfit that is Lifted was no big deal.

He kept playing in these PUSS Pocket Bars, as it was always a good place to make some easy money.

If you are one who play in shall we say less than desirable places, what is you Minimum Outfit you take to play with.

why bother..........I don't have the time to waste in a place where I need to worry about my stuff......If they are going to take your stuff inside, it's not far from taking your money out in the parking lot later on right?

Your is a very good point, and I also wondered why people themselves in Harm Way. :)

is he actually making money?

i understand that in joints like that its easier to find 'easy' money, but is he in the black or the red by the time he figures in the cost of buying a new cue and case every couple of months?

makes you wonder who the sucker really is...

Just don't even go! I don't really ever plan on going places like that. If I know I'm going to be there, I have a Brunswick two piece cue that came with my table in my house. It has a good tip on it so I take it from the rack and go.

I used to play in some less than desirable places in the Dallas area (tournaments or gambling) and I always took a cheap overseas cue that I had put a good tip on and an inexpensive soft case.

I never had any trouble with someone trying to take the cue or the money, but there was no way I was going to chance losing a custom cue and case because I was stupid enough to bring them to a dive.

The wisdom of playing in dives can be debated all night, but I learned that the best money is not always in the nicest places. I made a hell of a lot more money in an absolute dump called Fatz than I ever made in Dave and Busters.

The effect on my game playing with the cheapie cue was almost imperceptible in that environment and I won quite a few tournaments and matchup games playing with it.

Maybe 6-7 years ago (when I didn't know that much about pool, although I probably still don't:rolleyes: ) my ex-boyfriend, my friend Vince and I took a weekend trip to Danny K's in Anaheim for a pool tournament. Sam (my ex) couldn't find any action except at backgammon. Sam ended up staying at Danny K's while my other friend and I went to a nearby bar we heard about called Lucky Johns.

Vince and I went over to the bar and Vince ended up getting into a 9 ball game with one of the locals which I ended up staking. After being down 2 sets I could see that my friend wasn't supposed to win so I pulled him aside and told him that he had to get weight or quit.

His opponent was about 6'4, 240 pounds heard us talking and demanded that my friend keep playing even. I ended up calling Sam who immediatly knew who the guy was as soon as I told him his name. He was actually supposed to be a good bar box player although he wouldn't gamble with Sam. Apparently the guy was in San Diego the week before for a one pocket tournament and spit on some guy (who is actually an az-member).
After I heard this I immediatly wanted to leave. I told the guy that we were done and that we had to go and he raised his cue up to hit me (yes, he was paid off). Vince had to jump in the middle to stop the guy from hitting me with his cue! Now I don't go to unknown bars unless I have 2 big guys and a pool cue with me:o .

Your the guy I want with me.
Years ago when I used to play the bars all the time (the action was good and I needed the money), I always took a "tuch hog" with me.
In case you don't know, that's a guy whose job it is to handle undesirable situations. I got bailed out a couple of times by my partner. I used to buy them drinks, feed them and give them 10-15% of what I won.

Once in Bakersfield, we are playing the local hero $20 a game Eight Ball (in the 70's) and betting $80-100 a game on the side. This was big action then.
I was starting to beat the guy and some of the locals starting getting loud and obnoxious. One big guy said out loud that he was going to kick my ass if I won the next game.

My partner (tuch hog) was Jim Jeffries, who was about 5'10" and 185 lbs. but a cold blooded killer in a fight. (He killed a man a couple of years later with one punch in a bar fight). Jim stops the game and makes a speech, "We came in here to play pool and gamble. If we lose we aren't going to say a word about it, but if we win we are taking the money and leaving. If anyone has anything to say about it, speak up right now and we'll settle this". There was silence and Jim stood there for a couple of minutes just looking around the room at everyone. No one said a word, including Mr. Big.

I'll never forget Jim's little speech and the chilling effect it had on the bar.
We did win the money (about $800) and left without a problem.

Hello Vagabond,
I completely understand and agree that you can walk into any joint in the world and not be hassled.
Even the baddest of the bad would hesitate to mess with anyone with the nads to carry that "pimp daddy case"! LOL!
Hope to see you soon,
Rip

I think I am on the same page.

Carry respect with you and you can go anywhere.

My friends...they take me.
I take...well...me.
I'm not some martial arts freak but when you're 6'4",weigh a solid 350lbs., tend to look as though you're angry, rarely blink, and are not clumsy...people start assuming strange things.

I've never been in a bar that I was afraid in. I've been to a few that I'll never go back to because I dislike the clientele...but I wasn't afraid.

Bad places ...

I quit going to bars to play pool long ago, especially popular bars because there are always drunk mental midgets running around trying to 'prove' themselves in one way or another, and even if you don't put yourself in harms way, it often will find you, especially if you are taking someone's money on the Pool table.

I just go to Bonafide Pool rooms, and although there can be a little trouble at those sometimes, it is usually quickly sorted out, and the troublemakers are usually barred. Usually there isn't any problem though.

When I was young, I would go anywhere where I could make some money on the table, and have some stories about some of those places, but as I get older, I just don't want that kind of trouble, and prefer to be around 'Pool oriented' type of people. When I was young, I wanted to being playing all the time, but now, I don't have to play, and I pick and choose my matchups only if I want to.

I just recently went to a terrible pool hall. Actually it was a bowling ally, pool hall, video arcade, dance club mix. Basically you take every 15 year old gang of every race and put it into one place. You'll hear Mexican music blasting followed by gangster rap followed by death metal and so on.

But I didn't take any of my cues in. I took a 357stub nose and played with I guess you could call it a cue stick. It was a shame too. Some of the most beautiful diamond tables I have ever seen. Regular felt. Not even close to level. And super close together I could barely fit.

I played an hour and left. A hispanic cutie started eyeballing me and her brother or boyfriend did too. That was my cue to leave. I did have a couple grand in cues and cases in my car. Not in view.

Your best bet to avoid bad pool halls. Avoid bad pool halls. Money does you no good in the ground.

I have been to all of the Lucky Johns. Use to be 4. 1, 2, 3, and 4. None of them are or were that rough a place. You just got yourselves in a bad game.
Shoot Keith M. played out of LJ2 for years and he survived just fine. Is ex-boyfriend Sam M??

I used to go with a cheap cue that had a good tip. Now I don't really go to those places. If things get bad, well, that's me in my avatar. ;) But seriously I have a level enough head to know when not to get into any trouble.
Once, I went to a place where some really drunk guy thought my cue was a house cue. When I tried to get it back he got mad. Later he snapped a house cue in front of me so I went to the management and told them there may be trouble. They asked him to leave, and he went to his truck to get a gun. I was near the entrance with my friend in the parking lot. I yelled he's got a gun. My friend bolted out of the parking lot, I ran to the back of the hall yelling some guy's got a gun. The police were called, thankfully they were close, and got him and his friends.
Even if you're not looking for trouble, and have the ability to defend yoruself, it doesn't mean trouble isn't going to find you. To answer your question. When I go to a bad pool hall, I take with me, enough sensablity to know when to leave such a pool hall.
