Where should the line be drawn?

In December, I ordered shafts for two of my cues from a company who for now, will remain nameless (I don't like to E-trash).
I just went through all my messages form this place, and FIVE times I have been told "It should be ready next week".
Now, I don't want to rip this guy a new one, and never get my shafts, but my patience is starting to wear thin.
This is not a huge company, so I can't see high demand being a huge problem.
Any ideas??:( :(

Sorry to hear that ,
Do u knw it's going to be june u need to look in to this ,Or warn others about him ...
good luck ..

not enough info

We don't really have enough info to provide informed comment. Rushing any craftsman is a pretty sure way to get crappy work. Unless he had the shaft blanks almost fully turned when you ordered some it does take a lot of time to turn and "rest" shafts between each turning. When were the shafts promised out to begin with? Any idea as to the reason for the delay?

It may be time to give the guy a deadline to deliver by or you will go public or you may just need to be a little more patient, as I said at the beginning of my post, we don't have enough info to give informed advice.

I feel your pain. I had a shaft made by a prominent cue maker the other year. I was told it would take two weeks, but it stretched into 5 months. I honestly don't mind waiting for something like that, but I would really appreciate getting a better idea of the timeframe. If I was told 8-10 weeks, then I wouldn't be too mad over another month...but to go from two weeks to 20 weeks really pissed me off. I had a friend go to this cuemaker for a new tip and it took two weeks for him to get his shaft back. Then the tip came off on a break about three weeks after that. He, too, was upset.

Similarly, my Cognoscenti cue was almost 2 months later than the quoted delivery date. Every time I called I was told "Two weeks." I was really annoyed by the time I received it...and it was indeed beautiful. I would have been far less upset -- and would have called less often -- if the just said it would take another month. I am happy to wait a little longer, but don't keep pushing the date off.

I now expect this sort of experience anytime I deal with a custom cuemaker and have resolved to be more patient. It is unfortunate that things don't always go smoothly...but I find most cuemakers to be somewhat essentric in a similar fashion to other artists. I guess it is just the nature of the beast.

Oh, BTW, I would be really mad if I ordered a couple shafts from a production cue manufacturer, or billiard supply outlet such as Meuller and it took over 5 months to get them. I would raise a fuss in that case.

Umm..I would be cracking the whip on this one....shafts shouldn't take THAT long as he/she should have some already final turned and waiting for action....

If someone is making the shafts for you, I would agree that you might be getting the run around. If it a shaft that had to be ordered from a manufacturer, there is at least one company who has been known to be very slow in delivering products to their customers, in which case, your guy is at the mercy of the manufacturer.

Cue construction seems a lot like getting work done on your house - no matter how much or how little you're having done, it is always "two weeks" from completion!

If this were a big company / production cue deal, you should get your shafts in days - they'd be on-hand, in-stock, or very close. And, if you didn't you'd have reason to be angered.

But, from a small custom shop.... well, that's a different matter entirely, even just for shafts. e-Flaming is unlikely to bring any positive results, and may prove counter-productive. You are dealing with a fiercely independent type who is going it alone (or close) and not to be bullied into anything. A personal call or visit to reasonably set expectations is probably the best bet. Patience helps, too. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.
As it stands, I have gotten no reply to my last two e-mails to him. I think that is why my patience is wearing thin.
Generally, I am a very patient person, but I think this is getting out of hand. I just wanted some different opinions on the subject, just to see how others would deal with this.

have you asked for pictures just to make sure the cue stick is being treated properly and asked to speak with the cue.

have them place the phone near a table and ask to hear a few balls get pocketed.

that type of withdrawal is just more than I can handle.

One factor you haven't mentioned is the money factor - i.e. have you already paid for the two shafts?

Not making excuses for anyone, especially not knowing who you are referring to. But if it is a small shop, and they were going to the bca tournament..... there could have been alot of pressure and time used to get merchandise ready for that. They should have informed you however. But as many folks have already said "2 weeks" is the standard reply to when cues or parts will be ready.

it's called "cuemaker time".

the thing is,,,if you try to rush him, he might just slap some junk together just to get you your cue.

tim padgett, a protege of bert schrager, was actualy taken to people's court over this issue(and btw,,,it's ALWAYS about not being on time), and the judge laughed tim out of court from what i hear.

and it's not about high demand. it's about laziness, and taking on more work than they can handle, because they're not going to turn anyone down,,,or prioritizing their orders based on price. btw,,,the whole downpayment thing is bullsh!t, and they get away with it because no one bothers.

Sounds like you've had some bad experiencs bruin. BTW, cuemakers time is a breeze compared to Doctors time.

I recall the Peoples Court thing (vaguely). I believe it was Judge Judy that sat on that case(?), and she handled it in the same manner as most that she does. Very poorly! But, that's TV too.

Cheez Dawg, When you first placed the order, did the company tell you how long it would be, or was the time frame left open? If they gave you a date, and it's more than 2-3 weeks past that date, it's time for a phone call. If they're within a reasonable driving distance, a visit might be in order also.
