At any price. If I were paying $20/ea for shafts & had the choice between dowel or square, I'd choose square.

Best ones I like are 1" sanded rods with no center holes.

When Wes & I kicked around the idea of selling shafts, we would run them thru the pole sander right after the doweling machine. Man they were pretty. You could see the grain clear as could be.
