Looks like I'll be in Tucson on Memorial Day weekend. Would like to try and hit a pool hall or two if I can. Any places around that I should check out? Also, I've never been there so any other tourist sites woth checking out would also be appreciated. Thanks!

A lot of it depends on what part of town you'll be in, and what you look for in a pool hall. The 3 main places to play are Click's, Pocket's and Main Street. Feel free to PM me if you want more detailed info on any of the places, or if you want to meet up and play.

Poolrooms...

You have three choices. Main St. (largest, 50 tables) Pockets 20 tables or so) Click's...(3 Gold Crown 9 ft, bunch of Gandy 8 ftr's)

As far as tourist spots...

Saguaro National Forrest is worth checking out. Millions, and millions of Saguaro Cactus (BIG cactus).

Tombstone is about an hour away.. (Cowboy town)

The Desert Museum is another....Zoo with Desert animals.

Mexico border is a little over an hour away...interesting way to spend a day.

GREAT golf courses!!

That's about it.....

Tucson

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like a lot of 'nature' stuff to do there. Was reading the Tuscon visitors web page and it was the same type of things. Hike, walk, burn in the desert. Thanks too for the pool room listings. D1P, if I can manage to get away I will try to hook up and shoot some with you.

Nature stuff is for the Birds. Lock yourself inside one of these great pool halls the entire weekend! Pick-up a copy of AZBilliards Info or another paper and find out tournament schedules.

The hot Arizona sun

Now that would be my dream vacation. However, I'm pretty sure I'd find myself tied naked to a cactus covered in honey and scorpions. And probably somewhere near a prison roadside chain gang detail. It would be a slow painful death. :(

The last time I was in Tucson visiting with family, I played at Main Street. IMO, the tables and the balls were not maintained very well. On the plus side, the hourly rates were something like $2/hour if you play before 7PM.

Are there other pool rooms in Tucson that maintain their equipment better and offer good rates too?w

Just come on down to Click's if you get enough of the nature trails. One pocket is a popular game but you can also get some 9/10 ball action. The equipment is well maintained, the air conditioner is always going and if you are in Tucson all weekend there will be players to choose from. I am one of those players.......as Monte Hall would say: "Come on down".

As a side note, I used to play hooky from school when I was 17 and travel up to Tucson from Sierra Vista with two friends to play pool at the Billiard Academy on Speedway. This was 1968 and Alph Taylor was around as well as Weldon Rogers and a pretty good player named Phil Rasp. Tom Neil was just beginning to play back then, I believe. We pretty much donated to the big city players in Tucson.
I coincidentally ran into an old friend at Main St Billiards, Frank Wright, just last year. I've known the owner for several years and I thought the equipment was pretty well maintained.

Pockets tournaments are Sunday @ 5 (OPEN), Monday @ 7 (9 & Under), Wednesday @ 7 (9 & Under)

Hope to see ya when you roll through town!

When I lived in Tucson, I personally preferred Pockets to any other pool hall. The equipment was well maintained and the weekly tournaments had longer races (which I preferred back when I had time to play in weeklies) instead of just quick 2 or 3 game races.

I haven't lived in Tucson for quite some time but I would recommend the Sunday open tournament at Pockets. Great pool hall and atmosphere.

Thanks!

I had hear that Clicks was the place to go because they always had some kind of action going on. Don't think I'll be looking for any heavy action since I will be cueless and on vacation. But I still want to check out a new pool room and hit some. Looks like I will be free on Saturday to venture out.
