Which cue do you play with $$$$

If you own more than one cue do you play regularly with your more expensive cues?

I play in a local 9 ball and an 8 ball league and I just can't bring myself to use a $3K cue in the locations that we play the league matches for fear of something happening to my cue. I ended up buying a S/P style cue to use in the league play and it plays fine, but i'm questioning myself on why I own a couple of more expensive cues if i'm not going to play with them.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or maybe you are in a similar situation with high $$ cues that you own?

My South West goes EVERYWHERE with me. I will NOT buy a cue that I can't/won't/don't play with... Someday I might buy something loaded with ivory/silver/or pieces of the the magna carta, but until then my wood's getting played.

The cue it of no use if you can't play with it. I also understand your concerns. Merry widow and S/P cues are great for this reason. Bottom line is, if you are not comfortable playing with it, your game will suffer.

When I played in leagues I had a really nice Lambros with ivory throughout. I played with it at all places. We went to some pretty rough locations where I felt uncomfortable bringing that expensive stick. Mike ended up making me a sneaky pete for my league play and I would use the good Lambros at the Pool Rooms.

I have a fairly nice Gilbert combo that goes for 3K+. I take it everywhere, that is my playing set. I have been questioned as to why I take it into bars and such but I figure I bought it to use, by damn I am going to use it.

I also have a couple of R-Series, a 25 year old SW, and a Libra and they don't get out of the closet as much anymore. I figure if I am gonna risk one nice cue there is no reason to risk them all.

Been There Done That, keeping up with the League Jones. Oh yes I have several good Name brand fancy cues. But I now play with a $ 40 Player's Sneak Pete and could care less if the Guy I just beat has a $ 10,000 cue. For Ball Banging in Bar rooms I want something I do not have to worry about breaking or messing up. I leave it the car so I always have it with me. BTW I am a 9 in a BCA league so it is not the stick IMHO. However If I was more serious about the game, I wouldn't playing in Leagues or be using a $ 40 Cue.

I shoot with a
joss/OB-2 $700
Custom B/J $600

I also play a ruff bca league here in Texas. Im always affraid of my cues being hurt but I have them to use them.

Well I have quite a few cues, the cheapest one is just a banger but is perfectly constructed and shoots perfect for what I want in a cue. I picked up a PFD thats pretty expensive and it hits great but not like I like, so my roommate plays with it at the house. I only bought it cuz I got a really good deal on it, and have no want to play with it. If it shot just like the banger then I would use it, since it doesn't its relegated to a small investment and something nice my good friends can hit a ball with at the house.

But basically i would shoot with whatever cue suits my needs and meets them the most, the cue that feels and reacts the best for me and how I like....no matter how much or how little it costs.

I started collecting some really nice cues. Gina's, Scruggs, Blackcreek, Carmeli, etc..

The paranoia of something hapening to them prevented me from using them and enjoying them.

Since, I have sold most of them and use a nice Varney sneaky that plays real good.

My Schrager's and other collectibles stay in the safe and only get hit once in a while on my home table.

I have a very nice custom cue made by Jack Madden to my specs and it is my only cue.. It was not cheap and I would not buy it if I did not intend to play with it everywhere I go.. Even in the leagues!

Love a good sneaky.....regardless of the price, as long as you can focus on your game and not the safety of your cue, use it.....but, if taking it somewhere concerns you, it's best you carry something that keeps you in a comfort zone....

I've played in bars where I wouldn't even run the risk of playing with a $300 sneaky......sometimes a house cue is just fine

Before I jointed League, I shot with a used $ 300 Sneaky Pete. It wasn't because I wanted to be Sneaky, But because the Cue hit Great. But I let Peer Pressure of the League make me buy fancier Name Brand Cues & Case etc. After getting a few more dings than I wanted I have come full circle to a $ 40 Players. Amazing Enough the $ 40 Players has sustained less damage over a much longer period of time. It owes me nothing and is more like a Good House Cue. When it bites the dust I just buy another. BTW I have a Lathe and do Burnish or minor repairs on a regular bases.

I play with all my TAD's except the one I just recently refinished. At league, I regularly bring one of my TAD's, but I normally just play with my J&J 4414 jump/break cue. If I'm setup at a table that doesn't allow me to place my cues somewhere safe, I won't use my TAD at all and it stays in the case until league is over and there are less people. I've seen various high end cues get knocked over numerous times. Twice on a nice 8-point TAD someone else brought, a few knock overs on a couple Carmeli's. I regulate most of my cues for use on the home table now or at pool rooms that aren't crowded.

My pool cue is a Meucci 97-5 that I won from a guy who didn't have anymore money to bet on a game in 1999. It's in fairly decent condition for a 12 year old el-cheapo cue, and the spare shaft is still unused. It's not worth much dollar-wise, but it has an enormous sentimental value to me for a variety of reasons. Plus it plays good (either that or I'm so used to it I don't notice its shortcomings anymore). So it usually sleeps in a case twice its price, and I take great care of it when it's out. Yet it goes everywhere with me, from classy pool hall to sordid bars. I'd be very sad if it got stolen or damaged, but its purpose is to lead the life of a pool cue, and that's what it'll do until it's too tired to fulfill that role, hopefully in a long long time.

My carom cue is a crappy Chevillotte cue that I'm desperately trying to have stolen by carefully leaving it where I shouldn't, with eyewitnesses around to testify of the theft, so I can convincingly justify having to buy a new one to my significant other. Somehow nobody wants to nick it... It plays okay and it usually stays at the billiard club.

Interesting posts!

We've got some interesting comments and ideas on cues and whether you should play with them regardless of the cost or go conservative and use a S/P cue in the bars.

I started out using the cues that I owned and telling myself that if I own them I should play with them. I found myself worrying about my expensive cue and not putting my full attention into playing my opponent and that's when I bought my Runde S/P style cue. Now, I take the Runde S/P cue to play with and my full attention is on playing and doing the best I can in my match and i've been playing better since I started using this style cue.

When I go to a pool room and play on 9' tables I leave the S/P cue at home and I use my custom cue since I don't have to worry about my cues at the pool room. To me bar table pool just isn't the place to use a high end cue. I don't like to play on bar tables, but there aren't any leagues on 9' tables where I live so I have to play on the bar boxes to get a variety of competition.

I guess it all boils down to what makes you comfortable. Some players don't worry about their cues and they get to enjoy them all the time where someone like me who worries only gets to enjoy my nice cues some of the time.

I had a sweet little Viking I bought when I was 16 for $75 from a friends father......loved that cue.....it disappeared during my divorce years ago.....I would love to have that cue back.....it was worth it's weight in gold.....it was my only playing cue for 15 years....

I use a Viking cue when playing in the bars.

When I play in a pool hall I prefer to use my Tucker.

BTW, I used to bring the Tucker everywhere until one night I had to beat the living snot out of a guy for trying to steal it.
