Just wondering which of the tournaments in Europe would be most similar to the U.S. Open? when i say similar i am talking about prestige/status, that sort of thing.

There isn't any in terms of prestige unless you count the years that the World 9 Ball Championship was held in Europe. The World 9 Ball Championship is the only one that really stands out like the US Open.

I would not say that there are really any big tournaments like US Open in Europe....but there are plenty of medium-size tournaments where prize-pot climbs in 5 figures....
I think perhaps then European Championships are amongst the "biggest" but even there the prize-pot is not that huge....but that is not so much the point there...instead it is more about the title. however this event, like many other events suffer from lack of World-stars mostly because of smaller-prized I would guess. People like Immonen, Hohmann, Souquet, Ortmann, Feijen, Majid, Appleton, Peach etc. do not follow the Eurotour or the other independent events regularily but rather choose to do the more high-profile tournaments with bigger prizes.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I think it might be that their sponsors find it better investment to sign them up for high-profile events (US Open, Japan Open, DCC, World Championships etc.) with bigger prize-funds and only so often, rather than having to fight tooth and nail through the European events where the competition is just as tough but the potential pay-out is not quite as much.

Anyway...just my theory...

I believe it is only the US that thinks enough of itself to believe its National event is of the same significance of a World event.

And you know what?

It is!!!

Well, if we had to pick the biggest European tournament which one would it be? what about that World Pool Masters tournament, seems like it had alot of big names?

You and I know this, but the WPA doesn't think so. :sorry:

The biggest (and the only) European tournament is European championships held every spring. 14.1, 10-ball, 8-ball, 9-ball. Team competition is a separate event for a couple of years already.

Things like wpm and challenge of champions and mosconi cup i donot count as they are invitationals. Eurotour competititions are probably some of the biggest regular open tournamnents.

I think the EPC - European Championships are very prestigious - I believe you can only win gold, silver, bronze there is no money paid but I do believe if you do win gold for your country you can apply for sports stipend etc. in some of the European countries .
