which game is tougher? 1hole, straights, etc.

read this post in another thread...which game do you think is the toughest? I think the most interesting and toughest is 1 pocket. It's very cross-disciplinary. As far as whether 9ball or 8ball is harder, I think it just has a lot to do what your strengths and weaknesses are.

Whatever. The comments you 9-ballers make seem so bizarre to me sometimes. I wonder if we're even playing the same sport.

Btw, I ran into Don McCaughey at Home Depot the other day and he told me he thinks 8-ball is the toughest game of all. He didn't compare it to 14.1, but he did say 1-pocket is easier than 8-ball. That surprised me a lot.

So there...nyah! :p

1p is not easier than 8ball or 9 ball. Much more strategic to say the least.

I'm not much of a 14.1 player, but I find that game to rank right up there with 1p. There is so much strategy to it that I had no clue prior to playing it, or better yet, playing with a good friend of mine who has shown me the intricacies of the game.

I guess I'll find out how well I really do play one pocket. I've got a game this Wednesday with Gabe Owen. :D

(IMO) The toughest game is................

The one that your playing for the most (of your own Ca$H) that you have ever played for before. The game doesn't make it tough - Your head does.

I'd say the game you play least is the most difficult. Here are my thoughts;

Easiest. 8 ball, anyone can play and this game is probably the best neutralizing game as it does give a much bigger chance to the weaker player to win some games. More people have more fun playing this game.

A little more difficult: Nine ball requires a great break and good shot making ability. Generally, position play requires many shots to be longer and slightly more difficult than other games.

Even more difficult: Straight pool (14.1): This is a very tedious game and much of the difficulty is to put your mind in 'stupid' mode as you run balls. Requires great pattern ability and understanding were balls will end up after each cluster break.

Most difficult is 1 pocket: Patience and strategy are the key to success in this game. Requires a different level of position and good 'future' planning. The ultimate in Cue ball control.

All things equal, I think 1 P offers a lot more strategy. I also have some small chance of winning at 1P :D

I believe that 1-pocket and 14.1 are the toughest games on a pool table. It's funny though, that I was able to give a guy who beat me to pieces in 9-ball a run for his money in 1-hole.

It is always not the hardest ...

It is always not which game is the hardest, but which game
will be the most intense and pressure building..

That also can depend on who you are playing...

Which game will cost you the most if you make a mistake?

Given that you are playing someone real good, I would say

1 pocket would sink your ship from your mistake(s).
then 9 ball
then 14.1
then 8 ball

depends how well you have mastered not only the
skills portion of the game, but the mental aspects
for its strategy. Some guys never win, or almost never,
because they consistently make a mental mistake or 2
when running the table, and better players know that,
and count on that when playing them. For example,
playing bad ball patterns in 8 ball, which causes them
to not run the table.

Like playing a guitar, straight pool is the easiest game to play badly and the hardest to play great. You need to make long runs with no mistakes and instead of playing safe on one pocket, you have to play safe on six.

you also shoot at 1 pocket and not 6

Not implying that eight ball is the hardest, but I don't think enough respect is given to the game. Eight ball played right isn't just break and run. There are a lot more innings in eight ball than nine, even with top players. Anytime your in a game where you let another player at the table so often, it is very easy to lose. I believe there is 10 times the strategy in eight ball over nine. 8 ball is moving balls. 9 ball is usually not moving balls.

Just my 2 cents

8 ball seems to be a lot of fun for lots of people. And as I mentioned earlier in this post, it is a better neutralizer as it gives the non player or weeker player a chance to win. Doesn't mean they will win a set, but they have a better chance in 8 ball than most other games. Nine ball and straight do not offer that opportunity because both players are playing the same balls. I wouldn't take anything away from 8 ball though, any ball game favors the better player.

In addition, it also depends on who (your opponet) is making it tough on you.
