Which is better

Running drills or Trying to run racks?
You can't run racks until you have a reasonable number of tools (shots) that you have mastered. You can't be sure of which shots you should work on until you see what you need when you try to run racks (or play in competition). If there is a shot you have trouble with that usually stops your run, you should practice it or learn how to avoid it.

I am by no means an instructor, but the Bert Kinister video on "60 Minute Workout for 8/9 Ball From 1994" gives you the basic shots that you pretty much need.

Take a lesson from an instructor, get the simple fundamentals down, work on the routine shots in Kinister's lesson, and go from there.

Again, just my $.02.

I've just ran 2 racks since I've gotten back into pool a couple of years ago. It seems once I get rolling.....I screw it up. Either I second guess myself on what I originally planned to do and try something else or I just dogg the ball completely and get to worried about shape.

this is why we do the drills joey.......so that way we don't trip over our own two feet

When you find out the solution to this problem please let everyone know. the world of pool players would love to have the answer to this - especially me!
