Whitten case.....QUESTION

For the case makers out there, what would be the best way to go about fixing this or having it fixed?

Im sure things like this happen all the time and got to thinking, has anyone ever suggested having an Ask The Casemaker section.....or would that be to close to the Cue Case Reviews :shrug:

I would like to see an Ask the Casemaker section. I tried a couple of times to get help repairing a case, but no luck.
 
Well...I am not c case maker but....

Anything can be fixed, it's merely a question of whether it not it is worth it.


Just like cues, the first thing I would consider with a case repair is talking it to the original manufacturer.

Case repairs have been accomplished by shoe repair shops, luggage repair shops, and people at home.

Some simple repairs are made very difficult because of the level of case disassembly that is required. Some cases were not designed to come apart (Fellini, It's George, etc).


Looks to me like you need some riveting, stitching, and leather finishing.

Well if u want the job properly done ... Take it to the manufacturer... I'm sure they will easily repair for u.. N ur case won't loose value...
 
Going to the manufacturer can be difficult and expensive if it is an imported case.

If you just want "practical" repairs, like reattaching your strap and repairing your stitching so it works, a leatherworker in your area, shoe repair shop, or luggage repair shop can suffice.

For a high end, collectible, or vintage case I would be more careful about who repairs it and how.

I am not sure but I think on that one you can put the rivet right through it. If you don't want to go through the hassle of going to Whitten then any competent luggage repair shop, saddle shop or good leather worker can replace that rivet. The important thing to pay attention to is that the inside rivets dimples the padding, in other words it should pull the leather in so that the rivet is NOT flush with the leather surrounding it. This protects the cues from ever touching the rivet. If I am not mistaken that is how it was done when the case was new.

Edit: I didn't see that the D-ring holder is missing. Well even so you can get it repaired at a luggage shop. With a case of that age you might be able to lift the entire top assembly off and then be about to get into it to see how it was originally done. I haven't repaired a Whitten in so long I have forgotten exactly how it's done with them.

Not that simple

Unfortunately, the original casemaker for my case was Ann Gore. The case has a bit of wear, but I was still quite happy with it. Almost certainly, it needs a new insert. I received advice for how to do this myself, but as you can see I screwed up removal of the insert. I don't want to do more damage. I also don't want to spend more than the case is worth. But I feel terrible to see such a classic case in this level of disrepair.

I don't see where you screwed up.

The liner certainly is destroyed, but I am guessing to were trying to replace it.

The liner is out. What is the issue now? Make a new liner, salvage the label, and put the new liner in.

This one is easy. You have the liner out. Make or have a new one made and glue it in.

This liner is super easy to sew. Go to the fabric store and buy similar felt and take it to any seamstress and she will sew it up. You can use some rubber cement like Barges to glue it in. Follow the directions EXACTLY on the can. EXACTLY.

Once you do that you will have a new liner. And be sure to tell her to use the old label if you want to keep it.

This is exactly why an 'Ask The Case Maker' section would be good. I had no idea the top piece was just glued on. Someone gave me this case to fix and it seems like it had a piece resembling a cotter pin attached to the ring. There is also a small hole in the front of the case below the lid that seems like it goes all the way through.

If anyone has a case like this and could post a pic of the back I would appreciate it.
