Who cares about pool?

My small contribution is running a $5 tournament every Friday night for the past 13 years come August. It gives the lower skilled players a chance to mix it up with the better players for just a few $. It's the best way I could figure on how to give back to the local scene that's been so good to me over the years. It's my labor of love.:)

I help with the junior league and I donate billiard books magazines and videos to the kids as prizes and some I give to ones that seem to have a real interest. I lent photos and memorabilia to the local room from my collection as well as periodically bringing in pieces of my collection to show and discuss with adults as well as kids. I support area tournaments and I donate money and raffle prizes to billiard charity events that support local families or organizations.

Ran

I started and ran 9 Ball and straight Pool leagues for ten years at Northfield Billiards till they closed.
I also stated a Cue Collectors club that would meet monthly that included a monthly news letter.
Now I do my best to round up 3-4 guys as often as possible to play 8 or 9 ball.

I also try to promote a new room in our are Raxx by going there using word of mouth to let people know about it.

let me see ... oh yeah, each time i have played pool i have paid when i have lost and collected when i have won. Also, while navigating the pool world i have tried to conduct myself as a gentleman at all times no matter how difficult. in the future, I plan to do the same.

I have set a good example. I conduct myself as a gentleman when I lose and if I win I do it with humility.

I like this very much.

Actually a lot of people are interested in billiards in my area. I try not to be like many of the other players (which is rude or dirty, snobbish or dont-talk-to-me-ever attitude) but friendly and open.
When they ask me things I answer honestly and take my time. I might also show them something. But I never go around correcting people.

We also play a lot of different games(8, 9, 10 ball, 14.1, cutthroat, cowboy) and teach people asking about them and that there is not only 8 ball.

We also play Snooker from time to time or Carom. But putting balls into holes still is our main game ;)

Last but not least, we have a flat rate to play pool; but everybody rounds up the amout we would have to pay.

Tournaments there are really none. Can't say that I need them really.

Cheers,
M

I give cues to kids who show interest in the game. Nothing fancy or expensive, but it's always well received encouragement.

I help run our local tournaments, teach the lower level players at those tournament, promote our local cue makers, got my son into playing and he has been getting his friend to play, help out the pool hall owner of my regular room with what equipment to get and let him know if anything needs replacing, help the parents of our junior league players if I see that the kids need better or different equipment, play in every charity event I can (although that is not really FOR pool, just using pool to help something else).

Did not know you did that nice! Have you ever built cues for raffles for the kids? I'm not asking because we have several junior leagues in my area or anything and we have fundraisers to help the parents send them to Nationals or Worlds ;)

That is a wonderful thing that you're doing.
Good for you and God bless you.

The pool world needs more like you and fewer like the ones in pool history with guns and all that "we're so tough in Chicago" stuff.
You're a credit to the game.

keeping busy

Beyond trying to represent myself, and my game as i'd like to see everyone do...

I administer 2 in-house leagues at our local pool hall.
I administer 2 - 9-ball leagues at local private clubs (one men, one women).
I'm the secretary (and webmaster) for one of our local 8-ball partner leagues and Captain a team in that league.
AND just became Captain for a TAP team...

Just try and stay out of mischief.

Well I never did it for advertisement or recognition purposes, just really only to encourage a kid who has an apparent interest. I have given several cues to charities & fund raisers. It's usually to promote a tournament or league, something pool related.

I play every chance I get. The more people that would do that, the more people we would have in the pool halls, which is good for business and promotes the game. Along the same lines, I go out of my way to play in our twice weekly tournaments, even when I don't feel like it, and I play in our BCA 8-ball league. I also started a one-pocket league and developed a software handicapping system.

I also constantly try to improve myself and my game, and I readily try to help others. I usually wait until they ask, but occasionally I offer tidbits and suggestions.

Not much, in the grand scheme of things, but every little bit helps.
