OK, ok, now that you're done laughing at the title of this post, in all seriousness, who else takes your own set of balls to the bar/pool hall to play with?

I've become so sick of the poor quality of balls (cue balls especially) at the local bars/pool halls that I'm starting to take my own set of Aramith balls with me to play with, especially for league.

(I'm not even going to get into the condition of some of the tables I've come across.)

I recently came across a cue ball at a local Pool Hall that was so unbalanced if you slow rolled it when the cue ball was in just the right position, the cue ball would literally make a big sweeping curve one way or the other. I've also seen the playing balls so old/hazy/chipped or whatever that I was utterly disgusted. :( I've had shots go off-line due to a chip in a playing ball, it's only happened a couple times, but you never forget those shots.

Is this a problem everywhere or are we just unlucky enough in my area to have some bar owners that obviously don't care what kind of equipment they present to the public?

Anyway........I don't mean to disrespect all bar owners because I know of some that really take care of their equipment and I realize a lot of these places don't actually own their tables, some amusement company does, but back to the question at hand........who else takes their own balls to play with?

I take my own balls when I know I'm going to be playing straight pool all day...Aramith Super Pros. Won't use them for 9 ball. :p

Seems like a good idea to me. If you are going to buy a set for this purpose, suggest that you get a set that is easily distinguished from the house balls (Centennials, perhaps), or at least make sure the room manager knows you brought your own, lest you be accused of running out with theirs.

I saw a case for sale somewhere for carrying pool balls. Padded, solid handle. Might be worth the investment.

I don't take my balls with me because the bar I shoot league out of has tables that aren't deserving of them. They are unlevel, with dead cushions and they have accumulated so much chalk and talc over the years that when you go to brush the table (as I always do before the nights action gets started) it looks like a dust storm has rolled in. The balls haven't been cleaned in who knows how long. I'm guessing years. These tables are so unlevel that shooting softly at a ball and hitting it is a 50-50 proposition. I've nicknamed one table the "NASCAR" table because you can always count on the cue ball taking a hard left turn at some point in the game. Besides the tables being pathetic, the balls are also chipped and filthy.
I would take my Dirt Devil and some ball cleaning supplies and clean this mess up, but it would be lost on the owner/proprietor as well as all the goofballs that shoot in my league, most of which have the attitude that BOTH teams have to shoot on them. Whaddya gonna do???

Ball cases

Who makes them for a rack of balls? Are there any made from leather with a locking lid that can just be clipped onto a cue case?

i have a few sets of balls and when i go play where they dont have Centenials, Aramith or the balls are worn out then yes I do bring my own, my other ones shriveled up along time ago ;)

To be honest, I wouldn't play in conditions like that! I'm not playing in the local room, which has been open about a year, because the tables and lights are bad. The local "players" have been avoiding the place like the plague.

I do carry my own balls (Centenials with a blue dot cue ball), extra cue ball (spotted), and my own rack (the plastic racks just do not cut it). Carry my own and bring them in every time I play. Worth it since not one set of balls where I play is a matched set and the cue balls are pitted and light.

not too funny actually..... i just try not to shoot in those places at all, but we get forced to for league nights alot <APA> so i bought our team a couple cue balls that we carry around and even use in our home bar... nothing i hate more than a cannonball or bowlingball cueball..... if our house balls were terrible, i'd a bought a set of aramiths and gave them to the owner to keep on hand for us....

where I play on sunday nite- the balls are great but they have those stupid rubbery platic racks,,, so we were carrying our own oak rack.. Atleast until the guy that works there every sunday now knows to have a wooden rack waiting on 'our table' for when we get there every week...

i hate terrible equipment..... throws off my game bigtime... especially a cueball..

I used to take my centenials from time to time, usually though, I would use what the pool hall had. Most of the time they weren't too bad. Bar tables, on the other hand, are hit and miss; and it's mostly miss in my experience. If you find a nice bar table with a good set of balls, enjoy it. Good luck with your search.

I'm such a regular down at my local pool hall that depending on who is working I can just ask for one of the sets of Super Pros they keep behind the counter ;)

Let's see, my home room...tables play like hell (old, slow, worn cloth with shimmed pockets and misshaped titties), balls are mismatched, concrete floor (looks like a garage), house cues look like bananas. Hey when you play in these conditions regularly, you feel privilaged to play with good stuff. And when I do, I feel sorry for my opponent. I get to a table where I can slow roll a ball and all of a sudden I can play pretty damn well.

3-4 years ago I was in Wally's in Fl and the Spirit Tour was there. I jumped on a table and after about half an hour they came over and took my balls and said they belonged to the Tour and then they gave me the 'real set' that belonged to the room. These balls were older than me and mismatched to boot. The table was real nice, just reclothed and everything is perfect except these damn balls. I couldnt take it-Within a week, i bought a set a Centennials and then later traded up to Pro Aramith with the speckled CB. I carry them around in the trunk of my car but very rarely have to use them.

fortunately we have a choice on where we play out of in league.but we have dumped alot of bars because of thier tables and equipment.some people just dont understand you have to invest money to make money, and some bars owners dont care.oh well, those are the bars that have new owners and names every couple of years.I WILL NOT spend 1 cent playing pool in a craphole bar that doesnt look after thier tables.

I take my set of balls with me to the poolroom. But sometimes I am hesitant about taking them out and playing with them in public. I'm nervous about what people might think about me playing with my own balls. I worry that people might think I am too good to play with their balls. But their balls are usually a lot dirtier than mine. I keep my balls clean! And someone ALWAYS comes up and ask if they can play... with my BALLS! The nerve of some people. But every once in a blue moon a woman will come up and ask to play my balls. I am usually always happy with women playing with them. Even if she isn't ALL that I'll usually let her play with them... I just don't tell anybody!

Wait, is this thread about billiard balls? Woops... :D

Don't get me wrong because I love playing on good equipment but the bar league I play on, the majority can hardly be called pool tables. I guess I've pretty well become immune to it.

My team captain became so disgusted, he started carrying around a new set of balls with him. Practically everytime he asks to change the balls out, an argument insues with the other team.

It is so bad, at the city championships this last season, the table we played the finals on rolled off so bad and the end rail was totally dead. When you hit a ball into it, the sound it made was a "THONK"! and this was for city championship! Amazing.

I've thought of buying a nice set of balls that I can bring to the student union. The ball sets are all messed up which makes it hard to rack properly.
