Who else has met their idols?

Im pretty low key and do not put my life online like many others, but I figure im in good company with fellow pool players here and thought i'd share. In november, allison fisher visited within an hour of me, and I took the opportunity to go meet her. She was doing challenge matches with her fans, and signing autographs. So, I got to enjoy getting beat by her in 9 ball, watching most others get beat by her, and getting a signed cueball and poster. She absolutely packed the pool hall with her fans. I also took a few videos (low quality) of her playing. It was amazing observing her flawless mechanics in person from mere feet away. I started playing as a teen, and spent countless hours watching her on espn, and then youtube. In my opinion she will go down in history as the most accomplished and memorable female player ever. It was an honor meeting her. Pictured is her handing me my signed cueball, and the cueball as it sits today, which is right next to my mary kenniston and Dawn hopkins signed cueballs. Also, here's the signed poster. I will attach some videos I took of her as well.

Great story, thanks for sharing. I recall when I first met Allison in 1995, and she was larger than life. She's a role model of the highest order. In pool, I've pretty much met all my idols, but the biggest ever thrill for me was meeting the boxer Joe Frazier, another idol of mine.

It happened virtually by chance, as Joe and I happened to be sitting next to each other at a Blackjack table at Resorts International casino back in 1979. We got to talking and we really hit it off. Our chit chat as we both gambled lasted close to an hour. When he left, he shook my hand, and I'd have to say that his hand was the biggest hand I'd ever seen and that he could have easily crushed my hand inside his if he were so inclined. Thankfully, he wasn't so inclined.

I just look on the mirror….j/k…relax.😂

Yes I’ve been lucky enough to have met my all idols in pool

Cornbread
Buddy Hall
John Henderson

It’s a very short list and they are all my hero's for different reasons.

I’ve also been lucky to have met & know lots of people in pool I have admired over the years. Some of my best friends. Pool has been a great!

I met, then got to know Mike Tyson and his hands are giant as well, they are so thick and massive. I’d never seen hands like his before. My hands look like little kid hands next to his and I’m a hair taller. Amazing genetics boxers have.

Ok back to pool:

I shook hands with the most famous of all Philadelphians. He put on a demo
at a Summer Camp in the Pocono’s. A true gentleman/athlete. WILT. His hand extended to half of my forearm.

I, too, met Allison at a similar venue.

I had the pleasure of using her stick because she was showing a technique to fans and I hadn’t brought my stick.

In another discipline, I’ve met Derek Bell, Brian Redman, and Dan Gurney.

I almost met the Maytag repairman of pool. Early seventies and no real communications about pool. I went up the escalators in Sears and Roebuck's and came out by sporting goods. They had a pool table set up and a guy was either standing by the table or hitting balls. He was in a decent three piece suit and was obviously making an appearance for Sears or the table manufacturer. He was all alone and wasn't Willie Mosconi, the only sort of active player I had respect for. Most I had never even heard of. I locked eyes forward ea.ch time I went by and never indicated any interest. I thought how bad his job sucked and only later wondered who he was.

I did meet and play with a few "names", none idols or even close.

I've been fortunate to of met and played against Frank McGown , Grady Mathews , Steve Mizerak , Cowboy Jimmy Moore , Shane Van Boening and Earl Strickland then I've visited briefly with Nick Varner and Pat Fleming both on the phone if that counts .

Not to bad for a guy in Montana ha ha

After giving it more thought as Johnny mentions below I don't idolize them but truly admire their capabilities while they're at the pool table .

Johnny Archer, and Allison Fisher were my Idol's as a kid, back in the 90's. Then Corey Deuel, and Alex Pagulayan in the early 2000's. Always really loved John Morra too.

When I played in chicago back in the 80's I met a few what now would be considered old timers, most weren't rated yet. The coolest was meeting jerry franklin and buying my first SW from him

Allison Fisher is one classy lady and I'm proud to know her. Sonny Liston has the biggest, thickest hands I ever shook. And Minnesota Fats was first my boyhood idol and then became my close friend. I'm no longer moved to idolize anyone, especially so called celebrities. I do greatly admire people who do good on this planet, whatever their standing in life.
