Who is the best?

What!?? Tiger Woods??!! the best golfer? Ha! I don't think so! He may have been in the #1 spot, but not now. He is outta the picture folks! Tiger may have exceptional skill, but I assure you, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, and especially Phil Mickelson are just as if not more talented in other areas of the game. What irks me is that to me, you left out Ben Hogan, who in my book, was twice the man Tiger is today. Maybe at the end of his career, we can say that over all record, Tiger is the best, but he's still got a ways to go, baby.

Vijay, Ernie, Sergio, and Phil who? These guys don't even come close. Take Tiger out and none of them would be dominating the game with the number of victories like Tiger has.

It's simple there are 35,000 more people attending the tournaments when Tiger plays in them. I wonder why?

I would take him at even money and you get all the other players you named in a tournament they are all in.

thats a strong statement there .
He's come out on top gambling both of them most of the time. He also beat Shane 3 of 4 times in October at ten ball. I could be wrong. But that's where I would put my money.

If Alex Pagulayan and Dennis Orcullo played a race to nine every day for 100 days, my money is on Orcullo to win more than half of the 100 sets.

race to 100?

this brings to mind the famous "Color of Money" match between Earl and Efren.....Efren won the race to 120 by a score of 120-117....did that mean that he was a better 9-ball player than Earl? I don't think so. I agree that on any given day, one champion can beat another for whatever reason. I think that just means he was the better player that day.

Why is it that I'm always overlooked when these conversations come up? Prejudice against bald men? The fact that I don't win (or play in) big tourneys? You guys just kill me.

Forgive the oversight. I think most AZBers realize that neither Dennis nor Alex has to like it in action with you.

Well, on a given day, in a race to three on the barbox, with a red circle cueball and I'm all over it. If I win the flip.

the better overall player won that match. i watched all 13 VHS tapes in succession lol. earl had every chance to win. im not saying efren is the better 9 ball player im saying he is a better player period. earl is a legendary player but there is only one efren.

I agree with various people on this. A season that combined different games and and overall champion for the year really would not be that difficult to figure out.
Efren in his heyday would be comparable to Ty Murray in Rodeo.
Start off the season in January, and work to accumulate points in specific disciplines, with overall points tallied to determine at the finals in December.
Then you could have your 8ball,9ball, one pocket, 14.1, carom, bumper pool, barbox, whatever champions and contenders, and your All Around based upon how much of all games were dominated throughout the year, and when it comes down to the wire, determined at the finals. Highest point=highest money earned=Best. "The best is the one with the most." (sound familiar?)
Top ten of each division going head to head in whatever they qualified in throughout the year would draw the same attention as it does in Rodeo, or Nascar, or heaven forbid-Golf and poker.

Personally I'd love to know who could compete with the old players in the original formats and playing conditions.
We may or may not have any Hoppe's, but I bet we have some Harold Worst's, or Wimpy's at least.......

hahaha

I'm not going to even argue the fact that Tiger is the man. That's not the point. These guys on the big tour can flat out play. Tiger has skill, but he hits it wide and chili dips just like all them others. Yes, he can play hurt too, but that don't make him special. Read up about Ben Hogan and his comeback, Bobby Jones and his condition. Walter Hagen and his poor habits. While you're at it, read up on Stuart Appleby and what he went through. Paul Azinger and his battle with cancer. Some of the other guys who battled drugs. You are neglecting the entire spectrum of great, great people who did great things when you concentrate all your focus on just one person. That ain't cool.

I am not sure if those who mention Tiger can really play golf and know what's up when it comes to the PGA Tour. Tiger has had success. More so that most any other tour player in this decade. That is a fact. It is also a fact that the players I mentioned plus hundreds of other players have extremely high level of skill that can be lit with a gear at any given time. That is what produces those wins. Look at Rich Beem and his victory at the PGA. What about Ben Curtis and the Open overseas? Shawn Micheel with his stab within 2' from the cup at the PGA? Any of these guys can steal any one of these tournaments on any given Sunday. Tiger may have been the best at one time, but at the present time. He may attract the crowds, but that has more to do with star power and celebrity status than anything else.

Yes, I remember when Tiger won the last tournament he played in and that was the U.S. Open. If you know about golf, how could you not know that?

The point is this. What good is it to sit there and say Michael Jordan was the best basketball player, Muhammed Ali was the best boxer, and Tiger Woods the best golfer, when that statement excludes so many of the others who have come before them competed with them will carry on well after they are gone?

It would be more mature to say, "Ya, I remember when Tiger won those 3 U.S. Opens. He won that last one with a hurt knee too."

As opposed to saying, "Ya, Tiger blew 'em all away. Nobody had a chance, ever. He's the best ever."

It's kinda like two little children arguing over who's got the best toys.

I say worry about the best in yourself, not someone else. People love a hero and love to feel like they are part of their journey, but it's all a false sense of mentality. Why do you think children love Spider-Man or Batman so much? It gives them a false sense of reality giving them the idea that they can climb walls too.

We have threads on here all the time on who makes the lowest deflecting shaft, and who can draw the ball the best, and who is the best and hardest breaker, who can saw down the biggest tree, and who's got the biggest dick.....

It's just a pissing contest all the time and to me, it's rather shallow. It's kinda like professional wrestling, or Ultimate fighting in a sense. Give credit to Tiger, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson, Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, and anyone else who had the guts to step up to the plate. It discredits the greats of the past, present and future to say only one man is the best, cause it really ain't true.

i still

So, essentially what you're saying is that I should stop claiming to be the best in the world? Fine, then. How about, "I'm one of the best in the world!" And depending on how broad "the best" covers, this could be true. Yeah, I'm gonna go with that.

I think that match is a toss up, whoever's playing well that day. However I'd pick Archer or Souquet, those guys are so damned consistent.

me too
