Who is the cue expert?

Love it!

.

There was a member here who's handle is manwon(Craig), he had the most general knowledge in my opinion. manwon doesn't come around any more but we are lucky to have a guy named Chopdoc here now who seems to know production cues better than anyone else. Chopdoc is well spoken and always tries to help the other members on this board out. He will even put the jerks in their place now and then.

Thanks Chopdoc for all the knowledge that you share.

Definitely an expert.

But is he or was he on AZB? That's what I am interested in.

By the way, people that aren't around currently but used to be can easily be cited because we run into their posts when we are running searched about cues.

That's how I feel anyway.

Good clarification, I think you had a bit of an awkward start with this question. I think you meant mostly AZ contributors, or the cuemaker, if he or she is still active.

Could be open to debate, but here are a few possibles:

Szamboti: Barry.

Balabushka: Tascarella. But, Skins, Classiccues, and myself can give you a good idea.

JossWest: Bill Stroud.

Joss: Obviously Janes. But, since he doesn't post, Chopdoc, TDuncan and myself.

McDermott: Chopdoc.

Viking: Chopdoc.

Southwest: Laurie, but I don't think she posts.

Palmer: Pete Balner, Tate, Type79.

Paradise: RDWell, and myself.

Adam: Jayman, and I'll give an honorable mention to myself. Supplied quite a bit of evidence.

Rambow: Quite a few, as they've been around for quite some time.

Scruggs: Nick Serdula, Shawdowmoss, and myself.

There's more to the list, and it's not mutually exclusive. But the context is key with this type of question, isn't it...

All the best,
WW

Thank you. Very kind.

Manwon is sorely missed. He was a wealth of knowledge and fund to communicate with.

Nice list.

Thanks for the props.

How about any for Rich cues?
What about National, Cervantes, Gandy?

Brunswick?
Karl Mayer?
Katz?
Luscher?
Oliver Briggs?
Victor?
Mali?
Doc Fry?

Lots more....

Just curious.

FTR.. if you're going to anoint experts, can we please see some background?

Number of cues handled?

Experience?

Hi - lights of that experience...

I'll start...

For me :
Paradise well over 150 maybe 200
Includes mint condition all original low play Diamond Kings and an Ebony/Ebony diamond king and a Reverse Splice Diamond King as well as Eddie Taylors Diamond King, A Fancy Joe Balsis used cue.. I am sure I am missing a few... we handled the authentication on the Mosconi/Mantle cue
I've seen 3 eb/eb diamond kings

Palmer double that easy...
The absolute two best Supremes, period.
To date: Helped probably 6 people make Palmer catalog collections
Cues owned by Balsis, Caras, etc...

Karl Mayer - 50-75

Frye (Doc) - 25-50 - Including selling one for over 10k

John Merrill - 8-10

Fedunka - 25-50 of his best cues

I am not going to get into the bigger cues, but they are a plenty.

But because of my association, it might be much higher than that. I don't consider cues I just "touched" as part of that equation.

In fact.. I probably push more Palmer and Paradise people to Paul Rubino. Because as far as I am concerned NO ONE knows more about vintage cues as a whole than Rubino.

JV

ps: If I throw my partner into the mix, this list goes up exponentially.. then we start talking the big cues..

Good additional list. I think you, myself, and a few others would be in it. The is a Doc Frye (sp) collector on here; he chimed in on another post. I recall some Karl Mayer posts. Let's not forget Mike Fedunka, by the way.

As I said, you, I and a few others...

Joe, I think I should have included you in every maker. I was just giving a bit of an opener tease.

Not an anointing.

Not any arguments I hope.

Just a little conversation about who we have seen contributing on these matters that we think has been helpful or shown some expertise.

Thanks for your contribution! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Obviously, you need included.

And thank you for mentioning a few makers we had yet to mention!

You definitely need to get those digitized for posterity. A lot of history there!

Thank you! Malis were good, affordable, traditional cues in their day. You had to be used to a plain pool room with sandwiches, coffee, and soda.

All the best,
WW

Lol, right on! My pool room didn't always have the sandwiches and coffee, but the coke was never a problem.

I'll give a shout out to Joe V. (Classiccues) also, he probably has handled more cues than any of us put together. One of the more impressive, I think, was Eddie Taylor's Paradise Diamond King. I think this cue may have made more banks than any, and was in Joe's collection. This is one I'd love to have.

All the best,
WW

That's a great example of a cue that was only cleaned and left all original. I do not want to turn this into a condition thread. JUST that baseball cards and comic books were SAVED by grading and condition services, guitars are valued off of the originality. They are much more expensive, in comparison to cues, considering they many more guitars than cues. The next logical step in cues will be the separation of original condition and refinished works and values. When this happens, cues will rise again.

JV

ps: Thanks.. :)

I have to agree with that. I think it will happen. When? I don't know. It still seems there is always a frenzy to refinish cues.

But I agree as well, lets not distract.

I am still curious about who else might have knowledge about some of the cues mentioned or perhaps some that have not yet been mentioned.

We certainly have covered a lot of names and makes at this point.
