who is the second best player in the world?

What's the second highest mountain?

Second longest river?

Finished second in the last presidential election?

;) :) ;)

2nd tallest mtn: K2
2nd longest river: Amazon
2nd in Pres. race: Some guy with a Ketchup toting wife.

All pretty famous ;)

I would say either Hohmann, Souquet, or Deuel. Orcullo could be number 2 in the future but I don't think he has truely proven himself yet in tournaments.

Efren is hands down the number 1 player. Anybody that thinks different has been living on another planet. Who else on the planet could go to Derby City and dominate the field year after year and take home Master of the table? He has won the biggest purse ever in 9-ball and 8-ball. When the big payouts are on the line who has always stepped up? All the while being in his mid-50's. And this guy said he peaked around 30 years ago!!!

You guys have to put that pipe, DOWN. It will bring you nothing but misery. :p

2nd best player, maybe Earl Strickland, no that's not right cause his one pocket game is not up there.

You have to consider a lot of things, the discipline, gambling, tournaments.

John Schmidt can play straight pool with the best of them. He isn't a bad nine ball player and I've seen him play some top speed one pocket. No John hasn't won any big one pocket tournaments that I know of, so he can't be considered 2nd either.

Corey Deuel is up there and might be 2nd best IN THE WORLD. He play a mean one pocket game, top speed nine ball and great straight pool. Yeah, maybe Corey is up there at 2nd. Huh? Corey has only won one big tournament in the last year so he can't be second either.

Thorsten Hohmann plays great straight pool, is a serious nine baller and 8 baller but I don't think he is up there playing one pocket and besides what has he won other than a major IPT tournament. So he can't be considered #2.

Ralph Souquet won LOTS of titles one and two years ago but in the past year it seems he is a little off and coming up dry for the big win so he can't be considered 2nd best IN THE WORLD.

Orcullo put on a pretty good show for a few tournaments but he is not consistent enough to be considered 2nd best IN THE WORLD, unless you were to say gambling as the main discrimination.

What about Archer? Archer is constantly winning nine ball tournaments and is in the hunt at just about every tournament but he can't play one pocket with the big boys, so you can't say he is the 2nd best IN THE WORLD. Hell he doesn't even gamble. LOL.

Actually the list could go on ad infinitum but the truth is that there are so many people that could be considered the 2nd best player IN THE WORLD and it truly depends on who is on that particular day. Besides you only get 1500 characters in a post. :D :D

Like Lee Trevino said, "There are two people that remember that I came in second in the U. S. Open golf championship. Me and my mother!"

After watching Corey play nine ball and one pocket, I'd have to say he's in the hunt.

It is definitely the ghost! He could even give Efren a run for his money! Nuff said!

Hmm...interesting question. I was going to say Johnny Archer was second (to Efren), but I see that he has actually won more money, at least in tournaments, than Efren so far this year. http://www.azbilliards.com/thepros/2000thepros.cfm

Overall I still think Efren's the best, but Johnny's a great player. Can't count out Thorsten Hohmann or Corey Deuel either.

I would look at the handfull of guys who have won both the World's and the US open.

Having said that, while Efren has proven himself as number one, I don't think there is a definitive #2

We would have to really sit down to discuss this matter. Just take a look at the following list.

1. Earl Strickland has 3 World Championships (1990, 1991, 2002) and 5 US Opens (, 0 Challenge of Champions.
2. Fong Pang Chao has 2 World Championships (1993, 2000) plus 3 Challenge of Champions (
3. Nick Varner has 1 World Championship (1999) and 2 US Opens plus 1 Runner-up, 1 Challenge of Champions.
4. Johnny Archer 2 World Championships (1992, 1997), 1 US Open (1999), and 1 Challenge of Champions (2006).
5. Efren Reyes 2 World Championships (9 Ball-1999, 8 Ball-2005), 1 US Open with 4 Runner-ups, 1 Challenge of Champions.

It could be argued that the best money player in the world at any given time, is the best player. And right now, I think that man is Orcullo. He does do some things a little better than anyone else, most noticeably his cue ball control. And he plays very, very good under pressure. He may also be the best player when shooting a tough shot, right now as well.

I know Orcollo has shown strong results since his arrival, but I thinks its a little too early to say he's the 2nd best player in the world. My vote would have to consider Parica. He hasnt won alot of major tournies, but he has won as much as anyone in the green rooms.

Southpaw

I still think Orcullo would have his hands full playing the Old man Varner in 5 different disciplines. I would pick Varner to win the banks and 1 hole and 14.1. Orcullo would have a difficult time also beating Varner in a 9-ball match and 8-ball too. Nicky is 58 yr old, but as solid as they come. Don't know many players that have his knowlege.

I knew it! Varner is definitely second, and Sigel is 3rd :D

I was just curious where this info was coming from? Is there a definitive source for these kinds of stats on pool players? I've heard Mike Sigel claim he has like 6 World Championship titles. I find myself wondering if some tournaments aren't/weren't labeled as World Championship tournaments but where actually less than that, given the field.

The reason I bring this up, was because, I thought Johnny Archer had two more World Championships under his belt than the ones listed? He has listed on his web-site that another one of them was in 1993 and the other in 1995. According to this post Chao won it in 1993?!?! Can anyone explain this discrepancy? I also know Archer has at least two runner up finishes to the US Open, not sure the exact dates, but I do know one of them was to Nick.
