Who is THIS guy?

If somebody who calls themselves a pool player didn't know who he was, then they shouldn't call themselves a pool player.

This is like Barry Bonds walking onto a local baseball field wanting to play some pick up baseball and guys not knowing who he was. Only this is worse cause I like pool waaaay more than any other sissy sport.

If he came into my room and somebody there didn't know who he was, I PROMISE I would help him set up a game with the highest better there. And after the only thing left in their pockets were mothballs, I would gladly tell them that they just had the pleasure of losing to one of this generations great young players.
And for the fun of having watched the robbery, er, um, "matches", I would refuse any jellyroll offered.:D

It's a shame that talent like that labors in obscurity.
To be honest Terry most league players and recreational players cant name more then 5 pros im guessing, its kinda sad too.

I've seen this guy before. His name is Jay Helfert. He's a real choker. You play league, so you probably could get by offering him the 6, maybe the wild 7 - don't worry, I've never seen him run more than 2 balls in a row - it's probably the glove.

Also, if he tells you he won the US Open, tell him he's full of crap. That was some guy named Schmidt and he looks nothing like him.

Here is a side by side...

This gets my vote as one of this years top 10 posts so far. :D
Blackjack, I repped you earlier for some other post but if I would have seen this one first, it would have gotten my vote. So maybe you can make a little notation or asterik (*) next to the repped post and move it to this one.

And Jay, I don't know how you manage to do it, but even when you're just minding your own business, you got BULLSEYES all over you!:D :D

And WHY would you pose like that in front of a tree???? You look like a National Audoban Society sponsor of "Please save this tree or it will be cut down for another Balabushka Pool Cue" ad. Either that, or you look like a park ranger on break...."Yea, these are my mountains!" It also looks like a men's cologne commercial, like one of them Vital Sassoon styling saloons or something.:D
You should slug whoever took that photo!

I can see myself in the background of the first pic of John....I mean Jay... I mean....ah hell, I don't know anymore. ;)

Seriously though, John stayed just about the whole night and I was surprised at how many people in our own league didn't know who he was. He did make pool look like it was waaaaay too easy though. :D

Great post - I just have one question.
Who in the world plays pick up baseball? :D:D:D

I really don't know because I have never picked up a baseball in my life.

The only other sport I ever did in earnest was boxing. Wait, I forgot the last great sport I played before pool! DODGEBALL! We picked up sides before the game, picked up some people DURING the games and picked up others AFTER the game. We also called it bombardment!

Everybody BS's every once in a while about how things were in the past. But my senior (12th grade) dodgeball team had me, Jay Banish, Barry Minor & John Pagano. We would take on everybody else and I can't remember us ever losing that whole year. Think of "shock & awe" dodgeball. Every throw had "nurse's office" intentions all over it.:D

Hell Yeah Terry, I've played some dodgeball like that. When you knew it was going to be a dodgeball day you made sure and told Mom and Dad you loved them before you left the house in the morning :D :D

You know that the dodge ball is getting to extreme when you start to exhibit signs of PTSD like a fear of the dark, loud noises and anything red and spherical

I thought about that and its sad. besides Jeanette Lee and maybe allison, who else would they really know.

Just what man pro would we guess that the general public can name? I bet lots would still say Minnesota Fats or Willie Mosconi. And theyve been dead.
