Who uses an Ipod??

Remember the catch phrase; "Don't leave home without it." I have turned around and gone back home to get it. Love to listen to songs I grew up listening to in pool halls. It makes me feel young and more alive at the table. Someone asked what I listened to once, "I told him it's a recording of my wife telling me, we need the money."

Happy Easter!

As it so happens, I had to play against a gal last night who was wearing an iPod, and it was the single most annoying thing to do. I had to keep repeating my calls as she was constantly stopping me to ask what my intended shot was...additionally, while she thought she was making her calls, you could barely hear her, if at all. Each game seemed to take forever.

I have played others using them, and at least they would leave one ear piece out so they could hear what was going on...or keep the volume down enough to hear and be present in the game.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing to music...but it seems the right decision to make by keeping them out of tournaments....as to using them while practicing...knock yourselves out.

Play 9 ball:thumbup:

I use a mp3 player when I play by myself because there are just certain music of my personal preference that puts me in the groove. But a lot of times it is hard when people are trying to talk to you when you are trying to concentrate. It is also rude if I put in my headphones and ignore them you know.

In tournament or league play its probably one of the more retarded things ive seen. People have no idea whats being called, they have to ask over and over about hits and what not.

little story...

guy in our town was wearing one, hes playing a 9 ball tournament. he plays a safe and his opponent says is that ball in hand. guy wearing the ipod says yes and opponent picks up the cue ball .......... ipod user says HEY WHAT ARE YOU DOING, i meant i got a good hit.

see the problem this caused ?

I have two rules when gambling also, no ipod and no cell phones. cant believe the people who wants to text over and over while wating, plus they have the sound up so all you hear while you are shooting is BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP.

Not only is that disrespectful to the person at the table, it is also sharking when the beeping is going on

I HATE when I am playing someone in a tournament and they answer their cell phone!!! Now, if an emergency, I get that...but one night I had the guy answer the phone on his inning at the table and walk out the door for over 10 minutes!!! To add insult to injury, when he comes back, he's forgotten what suit he is shootin'...the guy had also been drinking heavily...and now DEMANDS I inform him of his suit. Being admittedly a bit twisted about the whole situation, I refuse to tell him. It got kinda ugly pretty quickly, and I was called all kinds of names, and quite loudly at that, but I was standing my ground. The TD chose to do nothing, and finally someone tells him what suit he was shooting!!!

I played out my set, told the TD I was done, and broke down my cue. I didn't go back until they had changed TD's...and dealt with the answering of cell phones during a live set.

Wearing an ipod during a tournament means extra responsibility for the player listening to the music and for their opponent.

I don't have an issue with it - you just need to have more eye contact to help curb issues.

Sorry you went thru that, Lisa. It was rude of them to do that and sucks you two got into it all because he just had to answer the phone. :shakehead:  :(

Exactly! The playing field is no longer 'level', as the non-iPod wearing player has extra 'stuff' to deal with now beyond just the game at hand....the only way to deal with this is for either everyone to wear iPods during a tournament, or no one wears an iPod during a tournament.

I very strongly feel that both iPods and cell phones have no place during live tournament play...period.

Thanks! As a rule, this kinda stuff doesn't happen much to me anymore. Back then, I was one of the only female players who was consistently showing up for these tournaments, and it was always the guys who did not know me that would try to pull crap...and then be utterly shocked when I called them on it...LoL. I get much more respect these days on the table...guess I had to 'pay my dues'.

ipod

I actually like using a ipod to keep my opponent from talking during the match...Most of the time I just plug in my headphones and dont turn the music on just so that they think I have my music on.... good way to avoid problems...

When I first tried to play while listening to my iPod (it was an experiment to see if it helped me focus), I couldn't do it because as I think someone else said earlier, I couldn't hear the hit of the cue and cue ball. I stuck with it and now I strongly prefer playing with my Ipod during my APA league match, not so much to help me focus, but to block out the annoying banter of my opponent and their teammates. Why is he shooting that ball first? That's a scratch shot. There's no way he can make this, you're ok. I would do it this way. Blah blah blah.

I also used to get annoyed when I hear them talking to each other while my opponent is up at the table. If I can hear them, their guy can hear them, too. I know this is some sort of violation, but there are some battles that I chose to fight and others that just aren't that important to me. Regular season APA matches falls in the latter category.

It was easier to learn to play with headphones than to continue to ask them to keep their voices down, or to learn to focus despite their commentary. I always have my Ipod at tournaments and BCA league for those times where I'm waiting and waiting, but don't have the need to use them while I'm playing. I guess this is a long winded way of saying, "I use an Ipod while I play."

I like it while practicing.

However, I don't see an issue while playing. Personally, I rarely have it louder than the jukebox would be, so I can hear any and all conversations that I choose to pay attention to. It does make it rather easier to ignore the 'background' noise that pool seems to encounter.

As for communication between players, I make it a point to pay attention to the game I am playing. Ipod/Music or no, if you pay attention it shouldn't be an issue. A little more intentional communication between parties makes everything fine, regardless of listening to music.

I don't see a problem with it when used responsibly. I will agree with other posters, that those who can't use responsibly should not be able to use them. Or cell phones.

FWIW

My son and daughter both have and use a Ipod, but neither play pool.

I don't own one. Have a cell phone but never have in on. Only use for emergencies.
