What happened to the "lil"?
Use some smelling salts. But then again, I don't know why the "lil" has to be revived -- does he/she have a DNR ("do not resuscitate") on file?

I might have to give it to Alcano, but not by much. I think they're both tremendous shot-makers, banks, safety players, etc etc... but Alcano can really come with impressive stroke shots and he's really got a hell of a break. He nailed the soft break when he beat Souquet in the 9-Ball WPCs, and he's got a tremendous power break when he needs it.

Might as well flip a coin. Two players that are each capable of stringing together racks until the cows come home + a 9-ball match = coin flip.

Buddy was probably the best 9 ball player ever. Nice ambassador to the game. Also heard that he was the best money player. I haven't seen him lately but it is sad that he put on so much weight. Look what happened to Miserak. Both struggle to walk around the table but Buddy is still with us.
Had they both come up in the same era, I would probably go with Buddy. This is based on how long he dominated action games and I believe tournament play too. To me it means he has certain extra something upstairs and an incredible level of consistency.
I don't think you can take things like the break into consideration (or any other modern day advancements in techniques or knowledge), since if Buddy was 20 or 30 years younger he would be able to do all the soft break stuff that Alcano can do (if he can't already).
It's kind of like saying Rod Laver would get creamed by Roger Federer because he doesn't have as fast of a serve. If Rod was a professional in this day and age he would be serving like everyone else.

Buddy hall hands down. Ronnie isnt even a favorite to beat alot of the guys out there now much less an all time champ in his prime.
'A lot' may mean different things to different people, but I have to disagree with you slightly.
As much as I like the old school players I was watching the match of Buddy vs Earl from 1988 on Youtube in a tournament and I must say that Buddy would be in tough here.
Understand, when it comes to shooting ability Buddy gives up nothing to Alcano. But in the area of the break and kicking as shown in that match there is a definate improvement in the last 20 years in those 2 particular areas that would be hard for Buddy to fade.
Now the REAL question would be who would win between Buddy Hall and Alcano if Buddy just so happend to have been born in 1975 or Alcano in 1950, I think all things being equal like that the match might be a tough one for Alcano. Buddy Hall with the advantage of coming up in the 1990's instead of the late 60's and 70's would have picked up alot more aspects to his game. I imagine he would have been a monster with the jump cue and given his touch would have picked up the kicking game Efren introduced the world too very quickly. As is turned out by the time the shift was taking place in the way the game is played Hall was long past his prime and on his way out.
I still think that no matter what era Mosconi was born into if he got into pool then he would have rose to the top and dominated. It comes back to the "what does it take to be a champion?" thread and Mosconi had all the pieces of the puzzle and in massive amounts. Huge heart, huge drive to succeed, and a sick amount of natural talent. I don't think there has ever been another player that had quite the total combined amount of those 3 things that Mosconi did and those 3 things that those guys were born with woud make them a terror in any era they happen to show up into.

I may have overstated it a bit, cause alcano is a world beater in his own right. But my point was that if were gonna compare one of todays players to Buddy in his prime Mika would be a better choice. Or Even Johnny or Earl. Alcano wouldnt be my first choice, more like 9th or 10th

hard to believe there's so much confusion about how great buddy hall played.
having grown up in lousiana, and having watched buddy play in his prime in shreveport at guys n dolls, i don't think any of todays players would have been favored if they were buddys age. that probably would have been true for 10 years or longer. in fact , they would have all been dogs
Im agree completely. Buddy was the man for a long stretch of time.
