Years ago I read a "self-help" book that was explaining how you can create your own group of mentors any time you want. So, if you don't have access to these people, you put them in your head to help you out with whatever you are working on.
When I'm playing 14.1, I imagine Mosconi, Sigel, and Ortman sitting by the table to help me with patterns or give me a hard time when I do stupid things
or when I practice one pocket...it's Frost, Efren, and Ronnie Allen fielding my questions and helping me with positions....
When I'm not sure what to do, I try to imagine what these guys would do in this situation. Sometimes it's aggressive like Frost or Ronnie....sometimes it's creative like Efren, or smothering like Varner.
Since pool is a game of being out there by yourself, next time you get in a tough spot.....stop and ask your "go to" group of champions for some help. You'd be surprised how well it works.
Just be careful not to carry on conversations out loud!
you WILL get some really funny looks!
