Who's the Most Promising Young American Player

I've been thinking about who the most promising young American male player might be, and the subject has me baffled. What young player not holding a major title is most likely to be next to win a major title such as a BCA Open, a US Open, Derby City, or a WPC? Is it Max Eberle, Mike Davis, Charlie Bryant, John Schmidt...someone else? Look forward to hearing the views of the forum on this.

Charlie Bryant... Sylver Ochoa..... there are several I can think of...

Only one can be the most promising, though. Who's your pick?

Charlie is having a great year. But, As far as promising young American Players go.......I got to see a young American beat many guys gambling at DCC AND after stay up most of the night gambling I watched him stagger in rubbing his eyes to play a match against Earl. He beat Earl pretty handily and didn't take any crap from Earl. After Earl gave him some hell about being late and then making a couple of remarks about how "lucky" he was getting. The young American asked him about How good his yellow shooting glasses were working for him?? Most of the Audience found this very funny. The Young American was.........Shane Mcminn.

I'm not real sure how good he is but I really like Earnesto's son. I think his name is Oscar. I saw Earnesto and him when they were re-felting tables in Sacramento a while back. I got a chance to talk to him and Earnesto; nice people!! With a dad like Earnesto, this kid has to have a pretty good chance. It is so nice to see good people in this sport once in a while.

I like the choice of Texan Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant as the most promising. Although he's not new to the pool scene, recently he seems to be on top of his game. He's got personality-plus, too, which is an asset in today's media-hungry pool world. I'll never forget him playing on the TV table in the finals at the Glass City Open when he was on the hill. While waiting for the balls to be racked, brandishing a huge grin on his face, with his indecipherable Texas drawl, he jokingly spoke out to the crowd: "Hillbilly on the hill!"

I've only seen Sylver once at the Carolinas Open, and he's definitely one to watch on the horizon. His best game, though, is one-pocket, which is kind of unusual for a YOUNG player to be captivated with. Didn't he go to the U.S. Open venue, but did not compete, and stayed at Q-Masters the whole week? I never made it to Q-Masters, but I think somebody said they saw him there. I don't think he's close to the caliber of play of Hillbilly, though, who plays all games, at least not yet! :)

One player I admire is Danny Harriman. He's definitely a power player, but I have NOT seen him on the tournament trail lately.

There's a whole slew of young players who can keep up with the best of them, i.e., North Carolinean Tony Watson, Eric Durbin (WHERE IS HE?), One-Pocket Genius Scott Frost, to name a few.

Tony "T-Rex" Chohan and his cousin Amar "Omar" Kang of California are great players. Because of the huge expense of traveling the circuit, they don't get to compete in as many larger venues as they would like. I always like running into them. They are a lot of fun and show no fear.

Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich is my favorite young player. He's NEVER afraid to step up to the plate, matches up beautifully, and takes his lumps like a man, no whining or groaning. AND most importantly, he is a gracious winner. He is capable of beating anybody on the face of the earth, and in a tournament setting, with his focus and shooting capabilities, he's is a formidable opponent. He is always tweaking his game and strives to be the best that he can be.

It's too hard to choose just one! :p Picture of Danny winning the Joss Tour tournament at Snookers in Providence, Rhode Island!

I've seen the two go head to head. He is. Too bad you didn't get to see him run the Fast Eddie's Finale this month. Incredible shooting... I've also seen him play old timers at 3 cushion for $500 a game.

I'm YOUNG and one pocket is my favorite game!! What are you trying to say? :D

YOUNGEST most promising player: 10-year-old Tyler!

I've met a lot of youngsters on the road who really enjoy the game. However, this kid, 10-year-old Tyler, could be a champion in the making. He plays with a Black Boar cue, and I saw him running 5 and 6 balls on an English snooker table with extremely tight pockets at The Playing Field in Richmond, VA. He's very passionate about pool, plays non-stop at every venue. I think his dad owns a pool room. Be on the look-out for Tyler in the years up ahead!

I have to pick him as the YOUNGEST player I've run into who shows promise! Plus, he's a real sweetie pie! :)

LOL, 1pRoscoe! :D Years ago, one-pocket was THE game seen played in most pool rooms on the road, and it is the favorite amongst many a player for games of stake. Even though the game is tougher than 9-ball (IMO), the game of choice in today's pool world seems to be 9-ball, which is what is highlighted on television.

Hopefully, one-pocket will make its way into the mainstream. I can't tell you how many times I've been in a pool room when Joe Public walks in and inquires, "What game are these guys playing?"

I read with great interest about Sylver's big win at Fast Eddie's, and I take nothing away from his game, but if I had to choose between Sylver and Hillbilly, especially in 9-ball, my vote goes to Charlie. His break alone should be patented! :p

Howdy SJM,
Max Eberle has been in the pro circuit since 1993/94.He has not produced miracles sofar like my favorite Tiffany Nelson.``Hill Billy`` is not young any more and by the way he was born in Hickery,N.Carolina.
My pick is Sylver from Brownsville,TX and Shane Minn from Tulsa,OK.
When Johny Archer was around 17 years old when he played his first Pro tour event( ? 1988/89) and told some people ``I am going to be the champion``. and we all know the rest of the story. After that I have not seen any young player displaying the skill like Jhony at 17.Cheers

I play a LOT more one hole than I do anything else. I learned the game many years ago and had a "brush" with fame when I lived in Dallas. I was just playing around with the back rail in a pool hall and an "older" guy (I was 18 at the time) came up to me and asked if I knew how to play one pocket. I said, "oh yeah, you wanna play some?" ..... He said, "sure, I'll give you 12-4". Needless to say I made one ball in 8 games, and it was CJ Wiley that asked me in his own pool hall.

I quit playing it for a while, then picked up 9ball strictly for years until I moved to Austin. There I met an 80 year old man that was GREAT at the game, and he taught me a lot. Ever since then, I have been hooked on the game. (btw - I'm 27 now)

Just last week I was playing another guy some one pocket, and it was his break. There was a guy standing next to us that had just started watching, and he busted out laughing as my opponent broke with "You call that a break!?!?!". I told him that if he wanted to play for anything, he was more than welcome. He didn't want to after he saw multiple rail kicks and banks and realized what was going on.

I'm really not in the area to say who is the up and coming pros right now, since I really haven't left Austin to play pool in several years. This is mainly why I'm partial to Texas players. :)

I'm just now starting to take the game seriously again after a year or so. I played in the 2003 Texas Open 9ball game, and after playing for 5 straight days 10 hours a day I got bored with it. One pocket has turned my game back on with intense interest.

young players

If you've been to junior nationals, or read about them, you'll know there are alot of young players out there with major potential. I can't pick one, but I can give you names of some. Shane McMinn, Tyler Strawn, Justin Bergman, Sylver Ochoa, Josh Brothers (that kid can definetly play). Depends on how young your actually talking. Look at Jesse Bowman......kid plays phenomenal!

Jesse bowman is like 22 and from what i have heard that he will play anyone on the bar table he welcomes all comers to his pool room

You beat me to the punch. My pick is Danyy Basavich. Only in his mid 20's, he is playing just about as good as anyone right now.

Hillbilly is having a helluva break out year but I think he is closer to 40 than 30 years old. I dunno what the criteria for "young" is.

Eric >former mid 20's

young players

if your talking about mid 20's/late 20's then you have to include Gabe Owen in that list as well. Definetly one of the strongest players out...or Jason Kirkwood....Brandon Ashcraft (not sure how old he is).

yeah, I almost metioned Gabe in a post above..... don't rule out Ross Connally, either. That guy is really moving up!

A name that comes to mind is Chris Futrelle(sp?) I've only seen him once (at this years U.S. Open) but considering the pressure of the tournament and the fact that he is only fourteen years old and his opponent was the defending Open champion,I thought he played well.

young players

I saw Chris Futrell play in the nationals this year. Won the 14 and under if I'm not mistaken! very strong young player. John Morra is another great young talent out of Canada.
