who's to blame here????

You talkin' to ME ?

I said "denegrate", not "degenerate". Actually, I spelled the word wrong, it's "denigrate". Look them up - totally different meanings.

Degenerate:
1. A depraved, corrupt, or vicious person.
2. A person lacking or having progressively lost normative biological or psychological characteristics.

Denigrate:
1. To attack the character or reputation of; speak ill of; defame.
2. To disparage; belittle: The critics have denigrated our efforts.

I'm waiting for an apology for the "lack of character" comment anytime now.............
Don't tell me what I'm not. I am a degenerate and damned proud of it!
Shawn Armstrong you are the most self rightious (sp) person I have ever witnessed. Well, not really, but damned close. I forbid you to use the acronym IMHO ever again on the Forum The dad had his underage kid in a BAR shooting pool with him. They should have been at the library or sumthin'. He was probably trying to hustle the kid . The first thing he did was steal your game. This is good stuff and I could go on and on but it ain't my thread. Danquixote, you did no wrong . But what in hell is that ugly avatar thing you got? That's evil. Do everybody a favor and get rid of it.:smiling-heart:

You don't gamble, do you?

The OP didn't do anything wrong, he welcome the father's proposal and proceeded to beat him.

Yes, I gamble. However, I don't locksmith or hustle. I'll play sets against good players that I think are good matchups. I use the money as a "carrot" to push me to play better. Now, by gambling, I don't mean I play $1000 sets. I play $50 sets and $100 sets here and there, and usually play "pass the $20" with a buddy of mine that plays the same speed as me.

Welcomed the father's proposal? Hmm, played for a drink and lost. Played for $10 and lost. Bet got bumped up, and robbed the guy of $70. Yep, pool players call that a "proposal". Regular people call that a hustle.

It was a hustle... if the OP proposed the situation. He just accepted the terms.

The father thought he had a mark and it backfired. Simple as that.

Whose hustle was it? Read the OP again. I went back and looked at it. DQ was the man who put on the hustle. He played the kid, and dogged it. The old man asked to play him for a drink. DQ held back, as he thought the dad would come back at him to play for more. After the dad won the drink, he wanted to play for money. DQ cleaned him. DQ was the dishonest player, and the hustler in the situation.

That "Ugly Avatar" is an owl that I helped rehab and return to the wild after some kid with a pellet gun shattered his wing. He has a white mouse in his beak.....I thought it was an interesting take on the wisdom of age......ie ....the owl......overcomming the speed and exuberance of youth....ie....the mouse......LMAO......and no.....dammit....I won't remove it.....LOL

OMG, you hustled that kid out of his fun  You're such a denegrate person

BTW, quite interesting for me that action pops out just like that in a bar. Does that happen often? It's not like that in Europe, to walk in and offer a money game to a complete stranger. I don't think you did anything wrong, in fact you were kind enough to play that kid even though they occupied your table and, imo, were very polite to level the gap between the players by choosing lower percentage shots. The only thing you should have done differently is to have stopped playing for money after the first game. Yet again, I don't know the customs in the States, maybe you'd have offended him by quiting too early. To come here and openly debate the issue shows that you're sorry over something most people would quickly forget, thus no way you are a bad man.

I know I said I would not weigh in again on this subject....but I feel obligated to set some facts straight.....in the interest of brevity I did not elaborate on the play with daddy. I did not lose the first game for $10 and I did not throw off in any of the following games. I did lay back on the game for drinks....as I explained in my original post....I wanted to see if this fellow was just making a friendly wager.....or was attempting to "clock" me. we played aprox 10 games and no agreement was made concerning how long we would play for. He could have quit at any time....he chose the $70 mark.....not I.....and at no time did I attempt to raise the stakes.......much to my surprise.....neither did he.

Let's make it real brief. You played the kid with "kid gloves". When the dad stepped up, you played him off as well. When he asked to play for money, you brought out your real game. Nah, doesn't sound at all like hustling to me.

After the first few games I would have been able to tell you could play. Can't hide a good players grip or stroke. If I played you for $10 it wouldn't take 7 tries to figure out you were a better player then I so I would have quit behind. I'm not a money player per se but I know when to fold them.

Player's speed

Being probably a better golfer than a pool player I still find in hard to judge a players speed in either game by looking at their stroke and thinking there is no way this stroke will hold up under the heat that I'm going throw at him! An interesting note as of last night I was talking to a friend of mine that is a pro golfer that was playing with Jim Furyk at Spyglass in Jim's first year on tour. On the first tee after Jim's tee shot both the other pro's said the same thing to each other and went on to watch him shoot 67 and on Spyglass that is a great round. Same with pool players. A guy here in Oregon is one of the top players and you would not be impressed with anything you see in his stroke. If he is stalling a little anybody with a game would try to jump on him and as I said before you might be trying to jump on Jack Cooney. I used to think that the fat guys with the half ass golf swings or pool stokes were my easy games and wow it is amazing how fat guys can play! Steady same ol stokes that don't break down. Go figure? Some times you win, some times you lose. In golf we always play a friendly game for small cash and pool is a little different when playing with people you don't know. Now you have to negotiate a game. You might be negotiating with Jack Cooney. I love it!
