why are Pool tables sold at Hot Tub showrooms?

As several others have said, it is because hot tubs and pool tables are seasonal items whose peak sales volume and lowest sales volume times of the year are exactly opposite. Billiard related sales slow way down during the summer, but this happens to be the peak for hot tub related sales. Hot tub related sales slow way down during the winter, but this happens to be the peak for billiard related sales. Quite simply, this allows the store owner to have strong and consistent sales throughout the year with little or no "slow season."

how did this most most unusual relationship ever develop, and futhermore, would you ever buy from one these places?

they give off that same slimy feel as shady used car lots/salesman
In short they have the room to display a pool table and it's another avenue for "Profit".

I see a lot of comments on here degrading these type of stores for selling low end tables and not good general pool equipment. Unfortunately, that is true but there are some out there that cater to high end clients. The problem is that too many people buying pool tables these days are not shooters, they just want a table to knock some around on.

I witness this first hand at the place I worked at. We sold Brunwsick and Olhausen tables and I made sure to keep up on all the knowledge and current info out there. As well as being a table mechanic for 10 years I knew more than any other salesman out there in our area. We lost many sales to other companies selling tables like Legacy billiards, American heritage, Imperial etc... Why? because the price was lower and the people didn't care about getting the best playing table. As a shooter I couldn't comprehend this, and some could be convinced that spending a little more on a great table was worth it. Same was said with cues, I stocked all the name brand cues but couldn't get anyone to buy anything but cheap chinese imports. So that is why most showrooms won't stock a high end table anymore.

This thread makes me glad I went to a Billiard supply store and bought an OlHausen. The other day Wife and I were out and about killing time. Stopped at the "pool, hot tub, billiard, patio, poker table" seller. Looking at their wares again. IM GLAD I PICKED THE TABLE I DID.

in my area there is a swimming pool dealer "niagra pools". they also sell hot tubs. in the winter they clear out the showroom and sell olhausens. i bought a grand champion from them because they are the only dealer thats able to deliver to my area as per olhausen guidelines. i could have bought from a dealer further way that has the rights in another area, he would have delivered (although hes not allowed by olhausen) but he was $1000 more. i had it delivered and set up for $4500. the set up was awful (they use the same guys that install swimming pools  ) so not long after i had it redone. still was the cheapest price i could find.

How it all started

Years ago everybody was calling the pool place (swimming pool) to get a pool table and one owner decided to try to sell tables also because he kept getting calls, it worked and now its history.

Rob, aren't you the guy who used to work at Phillips Energy here in Traverse City? I guess you moved huh?:) They sold the Gold Crown that used to be set up in there and set up a Valley bar box.:( I used to stop in and hit a few on that table now and again. Most of the good cues are gone now too.

Diversification

I actually haven't been to one of these places, but I do know they exist because there is one in Charlotte.

It's basically a store where you can buy stuff to put in free space in your home. They can't make enough money just selling hot tubs and not enough selling billiard supplies....especially since a lot of people buy billiard supplies off the internet now.

Yeah that's me. Things really slowed down there due to the economy and he is shutting down. It sure was nice having that gold crown there to knock a few around on when it was slow :)

Some time back Loree Jon's Pool Tables Plus, still run by Sammy Jones, started selling hot tubs and spas. They are located in Greenville, SC. Sammy told me not long ago that the hot tubs and spas are not selling the way he and his partner, who is from Sammy's church, I think, thought they would. His partner is a good salesman but the demand doesn't seem to be there. I realize the move was to do more business but I wouldn't have thought the two would go together.

this could just be the Minnesota in me coming out BUT...

most of us have outdoor hot tubs...

and we only use them in the winter...

the worlds best beer cozy is 6 inches of snow on the edge of the hot tub..

when your whole body is 100 degrees .. but the sweat on your forehead is starting to freeze..

honestl;y it's cooler than it sounds...

we never take the cover off if the grass is green...

why sit in a hot tub when you are already hot???
I had an outside hot tub when I lived in Vegas, still nice to unwind the tight muscles no matter how hot it is outside.

And I thought that was only here in Austin. We have a place called A-Tex Family Fun Center that sales pool tables, hot tubs and other outdoor and seasonal stuff. I've even seen christmas trees and other stuff there. Anyway what is funny is, they have a better selection of cues and cases then the local billiard supply house that has been here since 1971. And also I've heard that they do good work on cues, but I have never tried them.
