Why are some players using cue extensions for shots they don’t need to reach?

I’m noticing that some top players will put on a cue extension for a shot that they don’t need it for. For example Orcullo screws one on to his cue when he shots the 9ball halfway through this video:

aqfter i watched the shot on the 9 i was going to say the extra weight in the back helps keep the cue on track
but
he left it on for the 10 ball
didnt help him on that shot

It amazing to me that when Earl does something most people find crazy it becomes an industry standard!!

Say what you want about the pearl but when the weights, the goggles and the beekeepers outfits make sense to top players they follow suit!!!

Earl was on to something when it came to playing with a longer cue and most top players are using butt extensions now!! There are major cue manufacturers making extensions to fit every player out there!!

Sometimes it takes a “crazy” genius to revolutionize their sport or game or whatever. Kudos to the pearl for once again giving to the game equipment wise!!

Other then the weights and the hockey bag of gadgets that Earl uses he did one thing that change the world of pool and that was the longer or extension of the pool cue.

Loads of people mocked him for the longer cue in the beginning but now it has almost become a industry standard to have one.

I have been using a mid cue extension for a couple years , LOVE LOVE LOVE IT !

People are a lot taller today then years ago. The "Standard" cue isn't long enough today. The more modern approach is that the cue should be about the length from the floor to your chin or your mouth. I could possibly need a 59" inch cue myself, But I'm staying with a 58". I do have an 8" extension for my cue, but this is for shots that I can't reach. I don't have it on full time.

Cue makers could just start making cues longer, But from a selling point a 66" cue could be sitting for many months unsold. It just make better sense finically to sell an extension.

So now we have all of these extensions. They add weight and change balance points on cues. Nothing wrong with them. It's just changing the properties of these cues. You could like it or hate it, It's just personal preference.

Earl: Let me tell you what it did exactly...It balances my stroke.

...or just play the vid above and hear him say it.

I find that a free flowing arm swing type stroke def benefits from being closer to the balance point of a cue than where your hand ends up on a standard length cue without being cramped. The extension allows you to keep the spacing you like for your stance/setup AND fine tune your preference for where your grip is relative to the balance point, basically fine tuning the feel of the cue and making it ideal for how you like to dance with it.

I had purchased a Predator 5K and also bought an 8" aluminum extension for it.
So out of curiosity I shot some balls with it on, and it felt amazingly good. I was shocked
at how good it felt. I agree with what Earl say's about it balancing his stroke.

it certainly has been the trend. I think karen corr uses a mid-cue extension as well. Allison came to my area a year ago and did a meet and greet and played matches with us. She is the opposite, she was using a 54" cue. She talked about it in a few live streams, and said "everyone has been using extensions on cues and going longer, and im doing just the opposite. Im shortening everything up, and feel good with it". She talks about it at 3:45:00 in this video. This is actually from her trip that I met her at. She played amazing with that cue, as you can see here.

How tall is she? It might support the modern cue length theory. She also has a huge Snooker background. I think those cues are shorter. I think that just might be comfortable for her.

i dont know exactly how tall she is, but when i met her in person, I was surprised how small she was, and i say that respectfully, after Having seen her only on tv/videos. im bad at guessing, but Maybe 5'5?

Ye, Allison Fisher is a short woman who plays a short, controlled snooker stroke. Snooker players are accustomed to gripping at the back of the cue where the lil flat spot is so it makes perfect sense for her to have a shorter cue with the balance farther forward of her hand than where a free flowing arm swinger would like it (likely needing an extended cue to get there).

Every one of you is missing the best part of the video…

That was, without a doubt, the greatest reaction to a missed shot by an opponent in the history of pool! 😂

That was a race to twenty-five that looked like Dennis had in the bag after a great shot on the eight, strong on the nine, the ten looked like it was in the bag. Classic pool, all your opponent can do is sit in the chair and suffer. The reverse of emotions must have been stupendous but you are right, first time I have seen anyone literally hop to the table!

Forty-nine games went down to the last ball. That is tough action in anybody's book!

Oh yeah, about cue extensions. I suspect some are illegal by old rules, 26 ounces maximum and 66". I don't think size and weight are currently listed and for many the mid extension is part of the cue now. A little more comfortable length, a nice weight once you are used to it. I was going to build myself a three piece cue to fit on airplanes and to fit a case that didn't scream pool cue, three 22" pieces. In addition to everything else, it is a lot easier to fid 22" of perfect maple than 30" although that has became pretty much a nonissue with the coming of CF.
