Why did Roberto Gomez need to play in a US Open qualifier?

That seems pretty shitty for those 650s and 700s trying to battle it out for a place. A 800 should just get an straight up invite, even if they aren't active in WNT events.

They are gonna meet 800 players in the tournament anyway, right?
Soon at that. Look folks, anybody under about 720 is pure cannon-fodder in this event. Its the same rationale the USGA uses for the US open golf. To try to get in that you have to be a handicap of under 2 which would equate to about a 720ish in pool terms. Those golfers that do make it have no chance of winning and have a helluva time just making the cut. The days of 650 FR Joe Public players in the Open are done.

Of course, but the point of those qualifiers should be to exist as an method for the non-pros (700s and below, maybe 750ish max) to have a chance at getting to play in the US Open (which they know they aren't gonna win anyway) for a cheaper price, if they aren't willing to pay the full entry price. And the top-pros should just get a straight up invite. Just my opinion though.

Email MR and ask them. Love to hear their take. Seems like the qualy's are for ANY player not already in by being a WNT regular regardless of speed. 128 WNT players and 128 qualy/wildcard players. Based on what i'm hearing about the qualy's there may be a handful or more of under 700's in it.

Your explanation makes sense. If you are not a WNT tour player, then you need to qualify, no matter who you are. It would be nice for other pro level players that are not WNT players to get in though.

it's a one year thing. next year he will most likely be among the 128 seeded, and other, weaker players will not..

Nobody want to watch those players(700) and below. Would you want to watch 3rd tier players in the super bowl?

I hope they have stiffened the qualifiers. So many of the winners - good on them and all, are simply a waste of the spot.

But to the dreamers its a chance. Many of the dead money players dream of "the chance".
I might be one but age is starting to be a problem:p
I suppose. Dreaming's good. Committing to you might be the chosen prince not so much.
The practically ambitious though, have at least bought an entry spot.

If pool doesn't become "professional" it will never change. Nobody wants to see an APA 4 playing in one of the biggest tournament of the year PERIOD

We all want to play in the world series, super bowl, NBA finals etc. Nobody cares and nobody wants to see that.

We're either professionals or we're not, can't have it both ways. Believe it or not, everybody doesn't get a trophy.

It is a major step forward for pro pool that, at the Matchroom majors, only the WNT touring pros are guaranteed a spot.

Many of us reminisce about the days of "show up and you get to play" in the US Open, in which the hobbyist (perhaps Fargo 725 or less) could enter and say he/she played in the US Open. Those days are gone, and it is about time. WNT pros and qualifiers make up most of the field now, and that has brought the event to a higher level.

While I cannot vouch for it, my sense of things is that the Matchroom majors have evolved to the point that they are no longer dependent on dead money players (Fargo 725 or less) to make the business model work. As a fan, I had always hoped that it would turn out that way, as it brings stronger fields than ever before.

Hobbyists can still play in numerous events that offer Matchroom ranking points and, if they are good enough, can find themselves with a very solid WNT ranking that will eventually earn them a chance to become a WNT pro.

Let the good times roll.
