Why did you start playing again?

My youngest son wanted to learn and we started to play together. Things have changed in 20 years...j/b cues, safety play and ball in hand. What have you noticed about the game (and your game) since you came back? Where did you play before?

I never played alot of pool down where I'm from (south louisiana) but being that I did most of my shooting in the midwest and then kinda quit for a while when I moved back home. I felt like I had been thrown back into the dark ages lmao. They don't even know when something is a foul down here...oh well just another day in paradise.

The biggest thing was the plethora of nut hunters...and I hate squirrels unless they are in my gumbo.

After many years away I got back in...

It was once again the wonderful fascination of the game along with the challenge, competition and reward.

And perhaps as much as anything... the escape. I can shut things off for a bit and re-visit them after they've settled a bit.

I wanted the excitement of the game and something that I could enjoy with others. I thought it would be a great way of entertaining.

I spent many years in heavy industry and sold my body for money working hard lifting heavy. I bowled and played every racket sport and ruined my arms, back and knees. 50/50 work and play. When forced to retire early it was the only game I still had a passion for aside from Great Lakes fishing. With the cost being so reasonable I found myself playing the game of my ill spent youth again. I knew when I was in my 20's I would end up a pool hall junkie.

I always kinda liked pool since I was around 13 , I begin going out to a local pool hall to pass time ,, eventually I found myself in the pool hall all the time..

I got married and Had 4 boys and my time was occupied with them ,, I took a 4 year break from pool.

One day I decided to get a pool table , and was always fond of antique Brunswick Tables , and been hooked again ever since...

I still play in a League ,and go out to try and get money at the local Tourneys around my way,, but more often then not ,Im in my basement practicing pool , or restoring antique brunswick Pool Tables...

I started again after a buddy asked me to help their team in a 8 ball league. At first I didn't care if I won, or lost as I just wanted to have a good time. Soon I found myself being sucked, being more focused on the game than ever before and really liking the game more than when I left it 10 years before then.

I've only been back playing for about a year and a half after a ten year layoff so not much has changed other than the amount of knowledge that is available to me about playing pool. I didn't remember seeing layered tips, LD shafts or phenolic tips when I stopped playing though.

I didn't simply quit as a matter of choice. Both my mental and physical health went completely south about 94. Both battles were long and tough, I still have an open wound near my navel from surgery over 12 years ago and have to take a handful of meds every day. Just lately I've begun to feel well enough to give pool a whirl again.

Now there is the problem of distance as there is no local room and the nearest crappy bar table is about twenty miles away. Snooker, my favorite cue game, has all but disappeared.

Won't be making any great comeback as my vision has deteriorated greatly and I'm pushing 60... but I would at least like to get enough of my stroke back to occasionally feel those old feelings again.

So why don't one of you wealthy guys set up a nice new pool and snooker hall here in my home town?

I played pool for years in leagues , bars , just as fun the I got serious about it after about ten years . Then I slowed down do to work schedule and things in life such as kids sports and wife .., But then in 2007 I fell over at work with no warning of being sick previously at all. I spent months on a ventilator and in surgical ICU.I was in the hopspital and rehabs for about a year . I suffered multi organ failure do to some hospital over looking some small gual stones and things that later developed sisc and biehl ducks getting blocked and actually poisoning my organs and they never had a clue to after they sent me home 5 days after I fell over at work. My life will never be the same and I developed alot of complications and tumers now growing inside me. In other words im all messed up now and they say it's nothing anymore they can do do to all the internal damage my inside went through. But and anyhow after learning how to walk, talk and everything over again. I was pushed to the table by a couple of friends a and told to play, for exercise. But to shorten this story up I started to play again for exercise and to get my body fuctions back. My game has come back some what and I never thought in my life I would ever be able to play again. I had a friend (nephew) who came to the hospital when I was hooked up to all kinds of stuff and talk to me and say about pool and all I could do is cry inside cause I never thought I would walk or even go home again to see my family let alone play pool anymore. But my family and friends are all I have anymore and playing pool is all I do . I just wish I could keep my head in the game all the time every shot, but with all I had going on with me I am surprised I can play as good as I do. But there are still people around that try to take advantage of me or make a a$$ out of me when I am playing do to my belly is still large do to all the swelling they were never able to close my abdominum. Except with skin graphs and cadabber skin ////LOL. But it's pretty bad when Im playing somebody and thery have to try to take me out of my game by saying things about my belly to sike me out. Im sorry for the long rant but when I see threads like these I start typing and everything that I been through comes back to me. But I am so glad I came back to play again ..I appologize for this long post <<< ED

Ed....seriously....I am GLAD your back!.....Im praying for you Brother!

Grandpa and dad were really into the game so I started playing at a young age (grandpa had a 9 footer in the basement). Had no idea of poolhall or bar pool scenes (since I was really young). Played the game outside of grandpa's basement when I went to dad's bowling league nights around age 12 or 13....lotsa other kids (13-17) at the bowling alley playing pool on these 6 LITTLE tables, and I wanted to play too. Funny how we had our own little gambling scene there at that age - go bust? No big deal, go ask dad for money for a burger and fries or something - lol. Every once in awhile one of the dad's would come in there and play a few games, and as many say on this site - THEY DIDN'T LIKE IT!!

As I got a little older I had lots of other things that held my attention, competitively speaking...so, I shot very little pool. After getting a driver's license, it was almost non-existant...maybe an occasional game or two here and there in high school. By college, '91-'95, (I played baseball) I had taken up golf as well, and pool was VERY low on my to do list.

Skip ahead to 05-06, and I would occasionally find my way to a pool table when out at bars with friends. One night, after golf I decided to play some pool at a local watering hole on a Thurs. night (my wife's Bible study night). There was a league playing that night, one table had matches, and the other was for practicing. I put up some quarters, played one of the guys there to play league, and won....next guy, also there for league, I won. This happened two more times before I lost to the team captain. He asked if I was "new" on the other team. Um, no, I don't play in a pool league....he asked, "you want to?" After a short Q&A by me, I decided, why not, wife's gone on Thurs. nites anyways......

it's been a downhill slide since
