Grandpa and dad were really into the game so I started playing at a young age (grandpa had a 9 footer in the basement). Had no idea of poolhall or bar pool scenes (since I was really young). Played the game outside of grandpa's basement when I went to dad's bowling league nights around age 12 or 13....lotsa other kids (13-17) at the bowling alley playing pool on these 6 LITTLE tables, and I wanted to play too. Funny how we had our own little gambling scene there at that age - go bust? No big deal, go ask dad for money for a burger and fries or something - lol. Every once in awhile one of the dad's would come in there and play a few games, and as many say on this site - THEY DIDN'T LIKE IT!!
As I got a little older I had lots of other things that held my attention, competitively speaking...so, I shot very little pool. After getting a driver's license, it was almost non-existant...maybe an occasional game or two here and there in high school. By college, '91-'95, (I played baseball) I had taken up golf as well, and pool was VERY low on my to do list.
Skip ahead to 05-06, and I would occasionally find my way to a pool table when out at bars with friends. One night, after golf I decided to play some pool at a local watering hole on a Thurs. night (my wife's Bible study night). There was a league playing that night, one table had matches, and the other was for practicing. I put up some quarters, played one of the guys there to play league, and won....next guy, also there for league, I won. This happened two more times before I lost to the team captain. He asked if I was "new" on the other team. Um, no, I don't play in a pool league....he asked, "you want to?" After a short Q&A by me, I decided, why not, wife's gone on Thurs. nites anyways......
it's been a downhill slide since
