why do my friends think im crazy?

IMHO collectables are not something everyone can relate to: one man's treasure is another man's junk. The bottom line is, what matters is the amount of happiness and pleasure that the owner gets out of the item. For example, one of my friends just spent $1200 on a starwars figure which I would never pay anything close to....I guess he feels the same with my cue which I spent $1000 for. Whatever makes you happy. :D
Just a side note on that junk being treasure thing, I saw an old cue on ebay tha someone was selling, it has a W over an M that looked like it was burned into the butt of the cue. I'm thinking somone it trying to scam someone out of thinking that it was a Willie Mosconi cue. Well I don't know the history of this cue but I was looking at Dr. Wu's collection last night, www.wuscues.com for those who haven't seen it, and there was an identical cue listed on his site. Who knew.

Are your friends justified in thinking you're a little crazy spending so much on the game? Probably. Should you care? Of course not. Ha ha ha.

I saw a baseball glove for $450 on the weekend. I thought that was crazy. The other guy who looked at it in the store fell in love with it. Wow.

There has to be more to life than just function.

I have a custom Dominiak that I paid about $500 for with 2 shafts and came to find out that it is about a 1 in 5 cue the way the wood is laid in it by Dominiak at valley fordge this year. I recently bought a sledgehammer break cue a $350 cue. And I have on order a instroke artisan black/blue leather case 3X5 which retails for over $400. My friends say I spend way to much money on equiptment for this game. I don't think so. If I'm serious about something I like to buy the best that I can afford and it has to be something that I like. I am also around june/july going to get another Dominiak with 2 shafts since I just sold my Lucasi. Has anyone else had this issue on money spent on equiptment. Don't get me wrong I'm not a bad player just like good equiptment.

OK - look at the alternative. A $200 imported cue, a $100 imported case, and a $100 imported jump/break cue. $400 and what have you got? A pile of garage sale items - basically junk.

"Pride of ownership" - nothing wrong with that. Besides cues and cases, I have a library of books, tapes, and other items. It's our hobby, what the hell? I think you have good taste.

I'm all for USA pride and all that, but just cuz it is not made in the US, doesn't make it junk. You think all the great European pool players flock over here to buy our cues?

Keith McCready has used a Fury RP cue and obviously did not think that it was junk. Some production cues made overseas are decent and some are junk, a few are even nice. ;)

What's the old saying? "A boat is a hole in the water you throw money into."

Your right being from outside the US doesn't make something junk. I just wish that people would buy American when the products being compared do the same thing and are of relatively equal quality. I don't think that's asking too much, so what if it cost 295.00 instead of 265.00, it might just save an American his job.
JMHO.

I bet Allison Fisher, Sara Rousey, and Buddy Hall's friends thought they were crazy when they first started shooting...

Diva's post makes me think of Alison & Earl playing w/ Cuetec cues. I think I could get one of those for under $100...but ye I have a $250 sneaky-pete. A&E don't need 'the best' to be (AMONG!!) the best.

Whonose?!

Chuck,

Keep on buying man. I used to be that way, and I loved it. Had the golf clubs, some decent cues, and tons of stereo equipment. Now I have a wife, and kids and my 'budget' wont allow for as much free spending. Instead of purchasing tons of 'new' equipment, I have to use that money for traveling tourneys, hotels, etc. I have a good wife, but it still is hard to tell her I am considering another cue around 1000.00.

I used to gamble more than I can now. Back then, I would take my winnings and save up for whatever equipment I needed. That way it didnt come from my actual salary 'directly'.

Heck, I live in an area where my mortgage, insurance, property taxes are 600.00.....I cannot imagine living in a big city in an expensive apartment. Good luck to your progress to get better, and purchasing of the best equipment!

Its not a debate weather or not im not going spend money (more then them) on my hobbie. i just knew there were other people just like me whos friends are like why so much on this and you paid what for that type of deal. Ms. Diva hows the pool shooting going?

Oh, I know it's not the debate...but my point was that all these pro baseball, football, etc...those players don't lowball their equipment, but do your friends think they are crazy?? Just my $.02!!

Shooting is going well. I was working with Larry, a local at my pool hall and probably one of the top 5 players in Northeast FL. I just started a second job, so the time I have to play is slowing down, which frustrates me highly! I'm definitely getting better though...it's amazing to me that in just one year of serious pool playing, I have gotten to the speed I am now. I guess I am just made for pool!! If you are ever in town we'll bang some balls around!

My point was what that their friends probably wouldn't have even spent 100 or 200 on a cue...so, to their friends they were crazy. If the equipment you want is the best to you, and it's expesive...but you can afford it, by all means spend away!!!

My buddy just gave me some table tennis equipment to use, in there were some $60 paddles. $60!! I play darts too, and they can run over $100. I own 4 cues, have anoher one on order and may get another one before the night is over. I, and we all probably feel the same way, would rather spend my hard earned/won money on stuff that I enjoy using and will appreciate as opposed to a $100 bar tab, $150 Nikes or $80 jeans, to me, that is throwing your money away.

I also have 2 jobs but my table time hasnt decreased in a while its just keeps getting mroe and more. I average 30-40 hours a week shooting.
