Why do people play better with a buzz?

I think guys who believe it enables them to shoot natural and relaxed...
probably don't have a problem with loosening up, and could shoot the same way sober if they wanted.
I mean, if someone can have a casual attitude towards getting buzzed,
why can't the develop a casual attitude towards hitting that next shot without overthinking it?

The whole thing is really just an extremely flexible excuse.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen guys show their ass in league and say
"Well you should have put me up earlier, before I got too trashed to shoot!"
...later they lose early in the evening and it's "you gotta give me a chance to get a few beers
in me and relax!"

It's really a useful double-duty excuse.
"I sucked because I wasn't buzzed enough" or you can say "I sucked because I overdid it and got drunk."

It depends on how much "buzz" you are talking about. I liken it to the "free" booze you get at the casino. Yeah the booze is "free", but many folks don't manage their money well after a few, and the house collects. They end up paying hundreds and in some cases thousands for those "free" drinks.

In my view, if a person needs a crutch (which is really what we are talking about here) to play well, something in their mental game needs some work. Just my 2 cents.

I'm highly competitive by nature. I hate losing at anything. I think it is the hatred of losing that holds me back sometimes playing pool, particularly if something is on the line. Too much over thinking coupled with adreneline to the muscles can throw a wrench in my game. If I have a little buzz, I just play. I never think about losing. I'm not saying I have to drink to play pool but if I was going to gamble, I'd probably want a few beers before I started. No, I'm not imagining this phenomenon.

Son of a gun, Dave! All these years of knowing you, and I never knew you could juggle!...AND you can do it drunk too? LOL

1. Reduction of inhibitions. Keeps people from being self conscious.

2. Only playing while buzzed. Learning something while inebriated can mean that you will be better when buzzed.

3. Relaxation. Nerves can cause bad play.

4. Do you REALLY play better drunk?

Many people think they play better drunk. Some do.

I spent a lot of time doing some meticulous things while drunk. I had a lot of hand-eye coordination while very drunk--more than many people have sober. I had this because I practiced things drunk. I played pool drunk. I played high level competitive foosball drunk. juggled drunk, played darts drunk, whatever. My reaction times were still very, very good. My ability to concentrate was great.

That said, I still know that I could play better sober. When I played bigger foosball tourneys, I would not drink. I did have to find other ways of getting over the nerves.

It was hard to tell I was drunk. I once left a cops house after drinking several beers and half a bottle of wine while there...on top of about five gins before going there. He thought I was 'buzzed'.

I finally quit drinking. Drink is a crutch. I have no problem with people drinking, but to believe that it makes you better is simply not the case.

Alcohol is not the answer, it is the question. Yes is the answer.

Oh yes, someone answered this way back when. It quiets the conscious mind's interference. And makes girls look prettier. And helps me dance. Pool ... not so helpful with that.
