That only applies if you're being an idiot.
A friend contacted me to tell me there was a new thread on a forum I hadn't been on in years. Title was basically, "Hu was full of sh!t!" I looked at the thread, already a hundred and fifty posts in it. Funniest thing of all, they were now all agreeing with me while posting I was full of sh!t!
The hot button topic? Physics. The people arguing against me had been defying the results of inclined planes and gravity. A lot like people on here that grasp one point of physics while ignoring the rest of the entire body of physics.
I read through most of the posts in that thread on another forum and just laughed. No sense getting involved with that bunch of idiots that had just figured out that gravity existed.
Hu
No it doesn't.
It is a really different place in the corporate world today.
Why would anyone on this forum, or in life in general, allow an anonymous person to rent space in their head over boasting or bragging about a hobby?
I was tried and convicted in the court of public opinion over an incident for which I was 100% justified (Video) and yet people found me and made threats to me, my family and even a student at the middle school that my daughter attended told her that "your dad is going to prison".
I couldn't give a rats ass who says they ran 686 balls weak handed or beat the ghost 7-0 ten times in a row.
I do care however that if I provide certain information on a public forum and as a result I am doxxed and my life is affected.
It is not even about anxiety. I am a "nobody" in pool. In another walk of life (science) I am known to a lesser degree - my name can be found in a few insider publications, mentioned on the side in some books and I even had minor newspaper and tv appearances. No, I am not famous in any way. But in that other field I might be comparable to what you call a lower level pro in pool or snooker. Known to quite a few insiders. I believe everybody has seen people (even on this forum) being outed. Only recently a guy posted some dubious stuff on here and someone outed him for his Better Business Bureau record with a single negative entry. Which had nothing to do with the thread itself nor even pool. The same guy who was outed posted private email of some other guy whom he had a problem with. But again, that was stuff that does not belong in a public forum. Examples like this emphasize the fact that not everybody needs to know your identity.
You could also imagine people being known to be gay, having been in prison, being a political candidate of some party, owning a major business outside the pool world and so on. There is no need for everybody to know who they are. Some of those people just want to be left alone WRT the rest of their life and only talk pool, here. They might want to talk to a small group of people about their life but they want the choice WHO they talk to about what. And not be dragged out in the open by some jerk in a heated argument or such. Who might even post anonymously himself.
... Accept the things you cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference. I think that's how it's worded, anyway. lol
From Wiki:
"The Serenity Prayer is the common name for a prayer written by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr[1][2] (1892–1971). The best-known form is:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference."
Actually, it would depend on the company. I also work in the corporate world of today and before we hire anyone we completely stalk them on social media. My last employer refused to hire someone because of a DUI from over 5 years ago, my current employer could care less, but we still stalk them.
As far as acting like an idiot - if I were to see a prospective employee on a forum there is no doubt I would consider the context of the posts. Was this person simply conveying the knowledge they had, were they being arrogant and/or condescending (that means talking down to people), or are they simply spewing shit out of their mouth. Their political viewpoint would also come into play. Let's take SEV for example, he is clearly a right leaning (and I mean WAY TO THE RIGHT) Republican and that's his right and I respect that but, I wouldn't even consider hiring someone like that, it would be the same for someone leaning that far to the left also. I simply wouldn't trust someone like that to sit down in front of a client.
So, do I care if someone is on a forum, no, do I care if they're being an idiot and just spewing shit out of their mouth - yes.
You answered the question of why people want their anonymity retained very well.
My only statement as a rejoinder is your lack of a definition of what is "Way to the Right" or "way to the left".
Remember - it is illegal to ask such questions in an interview. Yet, you are bypassing the law with the social media stalking.
A side note on how this works out long term. I asked my Catholic cousin in Northern Ireland how in the hail anybody would know if anybody else was Catholic or Protestant when applying for a job.
The answer - by the school you attended.
It worked for centuries.
Anyone with a brain, in your situation...... would never come out.
Folks in your situation are in a VERY small group that "need" to stay anonymous.
I think everyone that can read understands your situation.
This forum is a little different than ones I am also on for cars, motorcycles, guns and watches. On those forums almost everyone is anonymous because its mostly about the objects. Nobody is trying to set up a game.
There is a large aspect here of members trying to keep their legend alive, talk about what a master of the cue they are or playing a giant and never ending game of "back in the day/remember when". I think those activities lend themselves to the use of real names a bit more than most forums.
Don't get me wrong, I am not out and out hiding but have no plans to frequently broadcast my identity and think in my case it is the smart way to play it. I understand some feel strongly about using their real name publicly and agree they should. I am shocked some can't wrap their head around the notion that not everyone wants to.

There's no way to avoid all the jerks out there, but it's your choice how you interact with them.
If your driving down the road and some jerk cuts you off, are you going to take it personal from a stranger and interact or scratch it off and just move on?
One thing that always stuck with me. Accept the things you cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference. I think that's how it's worded, anyway. lol
beaten to the punch...see post above
Again, much can happen without an identified poster knowing.
