why do some pros fly to England for the tournament, when they have a small chance of winning?

And yet the WPBA is the longest billiards tour in the US. The WPBA has allowed more players to be featured and then even sponsored. Women's pool was on ESPN way more then the men were, and even drew better ratings. That isn't a joke. I would say the top 10 are more than decent. Are they gonna win a mens tournament? no. Can they routinely beat your average regional tournament player/league player/AZ Billiards forum member? Absolutely. I have seen a top 10 WPBA player in my area do challenge matches and lay waste to everyone. A lot of 7's in that crowd that got made to look like 3's. But since they don't play like the guys, people seem to think they can't play at all, which is just ignorant. They play good in their own field.
It’s still a joke lol I watched when they had an event at the super billiards expo. I was like wth am I watching. You have a couple top players then a ton of women who couldn’t get out of a wet paper bag with a hole in it lol big deal they were on ESPN.. ESPN thought we would watch pretty women over men lol

I have been to the Derby City Classic for over 20 years, going each and every year. In the early years, there were some women competing in the events. Other than 9 ball, they looked like they have never played banks or one-pocket. (Jeanette Lee was painful to watch play one pocket.)

Even playing 9 ball the women never cashed (or barely cashed). And those "regional players" that you mention, ate their lunch pretty quickly, making them look pretty silly. I havent seen any women playing at DCC for years, maybe I missed a couple but my point they dont have an impact.

So as far as your comment, "They play good in their own field", that field must be in a different city.

I saw the same thing at Derby. Allison Fisher played there once or twice and cashed. Karen Corr played there a number of years in a row and routinely cashed in the 9 ball event. They never played on the final day however. I think you may be misunderstanding "They play good in their own field." Playing well is often times put in context. If someone wins or finishes high in lets say a 500 fargo and under tournament, people will often say they played good in that tournament. But that player that won or finished high, compared to other players, may not play well at all. Therefore it's all pretty relative. So for someone to finish top 4 at a WPBA tournament, they have to play pretty good. But those same 4 players put into lets say the US Open, they wouldn't have the same success.

Enjoyed watching the UK tournament on you tube this weekend. My question is this: the line up was the best of the best, the top 10 players in the world. Filler, ko brothers, Ruiz, Boeing, ect ect. Why do pros who are on a level below these killers attend this tournament? And I’m not naming names, thats not my point. That’s a lot of money to spend to get to England, hotel, food, transportation, ect. And they never get close to winning?

And they all do the same pattern: win their first match, lose the second, win their first match on the loser side, maybe win two or more. Then lose and they are out.

I know anybody can do as they please, and i get that. But it just seems to be an unproductive week to me.

And I’m not trying to be a butthead about this subject, just trying to figure it out. I can’t even think of a MAJOR tournament that a lower level pro has every won?
The same reason why fat guys go to the club when they have no chance of scoring. They just want to spend a few bucks to test the waters...

Billy is sponsored by Meucci. I know Hunter does lessons a lot. I see Billy finishing better than Hunter most of the time but you are correct in your observations.
Billy does fine in Derby City Banks and One Pocket, and he won a Turning Stone a few years back. But other than that, you almost never see him after the first two or three days of any major tournament.

Didn't Karen once lose to Shaw in a Turning Stone final, after beating Earl to get there?

Keith Thompson won the Allround at the 1970 Johnston City with a borrowed cue.
Mohamed Soufi almost captured first prize in his first major 9-ball tournament.
……you'll never know if you don’t try

Thompson aka Pasadena Squirl. Saw him several times at LeCue in Houston. Played his brother at a beer joint called Randy’s Wreck on HWY 225.

Yup .. right after she beat earl in the semi final And Shaw ran over her like she was an apa 5 lol

Is a pretty sexist remark. We shouldn't be treating them like pool players, This is not a physical dominance game. We should all be equal.
There's a certain lady pro who irks me to no end. Strutting around like a pony.
Tried to give her the 7 out....was never gonna happen.

Shaw does that to a lot of people. lol. Even now Earl is still a really good player and to get to the finals of Turning Stone is still a big deal. Very few people get that opportunity.

I was thinking of hunter Lombardo and billy Thorpe. Don’t know if either of these two guys are sponsored or not, but they always get the same results. Win, loose, win, win lose. Every major tournament???

i thought you meant guys like robert hart or michael yednak. billy thorpe is another discussion imo, he's a sponsored pro with a serious chance to get into invitational events such as the mosconi cup (which i believe has a bigger purse this year too).

also look at shane wolford, many people could've asked the same question about him before the UK open, but he broke through and showed a lot of quality in that event.

oh heck yea.. I feel like at that time she was really playing good and was playing in a lot of “men’s” tournaments and doing well.
