Why does the tip leave the table?

I have a good hitting shaft that was supposed to be made by Mottey. It plays very good, but heres the problem, it wobbles on all but one cue that I have. It is a 3/8 10 pin, and when I put it on a McDermott butt it flops and the tip leaves the table. I put it on an old Viking butt with a 3/8 10 pin, and it rolls straight. ??? Ive tried a few other 3/8 10 butts, and all have the same result. I had a good cuemaker re-face the shaft, and he said it was dead straight between centers. So what is the answer to this riddle? Also, the butts are all straight, and roll straight with their original McDermott shafts.

Just a thought......

Are the pins on the McDermott butts longer than on the Viking? Maybe the pin is bottoming out in the shaft before the faces actually seat.

Much easier to drill and tap slightly deeper. Also I would check the faces of both the butt and the shaft once again as just the littlest bit of dirt or faced not perfectly square can make a big difference at the tip end.

Thanks for tip. I have an ever so slight rattle that I can't track down. It is a 3 piece break/jump cue. If you hold the butt and palm slap the center of the cue firmly, you get a rattle.

If it's the same cue then I would say that it is the facings not matching. When the cue is gently slapped the sound you here is probably the fsces on the shsft and but, that aren't quite touching completely, coming together and making a noise, although, if it is as Bill says that the pin is not quite allowing the shaft to make contact, the same occurrence and sound would be heard.

Well I finally made it home, and looked at the pins. It looks like the pin on the Viking butt is longer than the McDermott butt????

what dick said, just tap the shaft more. My weinstock and the one I'm almost done with are built to the same spec at the joint so I can interchange the shafts. It was wasn't bottoming out, just tapped the shaft a little bit more to remove some of the epoxy/wood down there and WA-LA shaft seats just fine :)

works like a charm.

It rolls straight on the Viking butt though. Its the McDeromott butts that it flops on, and they have a shorter pin.

There obviously has to be something different between to Viking butt and all the others. BTW, are ALL the other butts McDermott's? If yes, can you try it on any other types of butts?

When you screw the shaft onto the butt, is the fit tighter/snugger on the Viking than on the others?
