Why in the world do they have to clap on every shot

I have a hard time watching the women play pool on tv.
Not that they can't play, there is a lot of them that would wax me i'm sure
but after every shot they make even if it is a simple routine shot the whole
audience claps like they have all been introduced to some great break through in the way we play pool. Plenty of good shots are made by the women on tv but i don't think they all deserve a response like they get. It seems to me that the audience doesn't think that they should be able to make the shots they do and when the ball drops they find them selves bouncing around in their seats wooohoooooo.
Maybe i'm being a little melow dramatic with it but that usually stirs up a lot of good stuff.
Just curious if anyone feels the same way

They are asked to do so by those people doing the filming.

This has always bugged me to no end. If you've ever been to a Joss Tournament you must have noticed that for every shot Karen Corr shots there seems to be a bunch of women clapping and ohhing and ahhing no matter how routine the short. This also ticks me off. And if you really think about it, it is insulting to women. Basically it is saying women can't be expected to make shots men do so we'll applaud every shot to give the "girl" some support. It doesn't matter if they blow their position, if the ball drops the "fans" applaud.
FWIW, it is also one of my pet peeves.
 
If you check the seats you will see a lot of the WPBA players and knowledgeable players there who are clapping. And if you watch Smith you will see him circling his hand over his head egging on the spectators. It is all orchestrated by the program director. It makes for good TV and has been going on since the Howdy Doody show. At least it is not a canned track. But if that is your only complaint then consider it a small price to pay.

I'm with you on the insulting thing, I thik some women can play just as well as some of the guys out there. Guy yung Kim or however you spell it
in my opinion will be just as good as anyone out there in the next few years.
She has that stroke that most guys have, kinda a free wheel stroke that can really juice the cue.

I definitely agree that the clapping is excessive and very annoying. I say when they do something extraordinary then clap. Or when they win a rack clap. But not for every stupid little duck. They even clap when they miss position, so they really are only saluting the ball pocketing which isn't where the real skill lies.

Is the majority of the audience pool players at most of the major women's events or do they just bring people in from the casino/hotel? One would think that a knowledgable audience wouldn't feel the need to applaud a simple shot.

Also it seems that it's usually an unenthusiastic applause. They're just clapping 'cause somebody's telling them to, not because they're excited about the match. It's the same droning applause every time for the same duration. If I were playing I would almost feel patronized. But that's just me.
 
Agreed, all that clapping is very annoying. It makes me think the audience is not very knowledgeable about the game.
 
I like when they clap on a made shot and then the player gets way out of shape or safed behind a ball....... :D

Yeah, I love that. They're still clapping as the ball shoots toward a pocket or behind a ball. I don't mind that they are encouraged to clap, but this sort of applause just makes the audience members look like they have zero pool knowledge.
 
I hate it too, but I think it's purely for encouragement. And also that women players love to rev up the audience...esp Vivian the tornado.

Heck why nopt clap and cheer on your favortie player before they shoot and during the shot...why must we be quiet ...that would be the real test of concentration and nerve
 
I really think it is funny when they make a routine shot, everyone is clapping and the cueball either gets hooked behind a ball or falls in the pocket. What or who are they clapping for? Now it seems as if they are clapping for the other player.

I think every show on TV should follow the format of "My Name is Earl", there is no laugh track or canned laugh

When the shot of the match was a lucky or fluke shot? ... lol

But, imagine trying to train an audience to only clap when
an applause card is held up ..... priceless .... lol

what is the problem with clapping for someone when something good happens no matter how trivial, skillfull, or lucky? cmon now

I think every time Ive watched women's billiards on TV there has been clapping and then a ball will end up hidden behind a ball for the next shot. No one even says aaahhhhhh, at that point. That's pathetic. there should atleast be some ahhhhs and not this evervescent pall of clapping as though everything they do is the most awesome thing. That's all anyone is saying. There used to be aahhh's and there should still be.

What really burns me up is the way that Lawrence keeps on bantering what great shots they are making and such great cue ball control on every shot they make on a table that has buckets for pockets. A couple of days ago he was the comentater on a Allison Fischer and Monica Webb match and he just kept up chattering about Allison being the greatest player on earth. Give me a break!

I was watching that I think. I saw those pockets and was thinking oh my gosh that must be two and a half balls width at the front of the rails. They were MONSTROUS.
