I am guessing it's the same type of thing as people calling threading with live tooling "thread grinding". Grinding operations use a stone not a cutter.

Well I'm probably wrong in this, but I would guess its called a pin because it is used in a joint. A screw is used to fasten things together, on a somewhat permanent basis, where a pin would be able to come apart faster and seperate the two pieces. As things have evolved so have the materials used, maybe once in time it was just a pin that had no threads and was more of a force fit.
After all I would guess the 2 peice cue came about because it was easier to store, and perhaps because it didn't warp as fast. It would have been easy to take a one piece, cut it in two, add a hole and a pin and go from there. Wouldn't doubt if it doesn't date back to the first cuemaker and what he/she used.
Why is fishing line called line instead of string? Why are errors in computer programs called bugs? (I actually know the answer to that one) Why is the sky blue? Grass Green? (ok I know those two too)

beats me why they call them 'pins', ...go to www.cuestik.com (atlas billiards) and email them...their online catalog calls them 'pins'...maybe they might be able to solve the mystery !........felt (for pool tables) is a cloth made of a natural fiber (wool) that is compacted by rolling and pressure (w/o spinning or weaving),,!! man, must of been fuzzy after a few games !!,,, guess the name 'felt' stuck ........

Actually, its worsted wool, like just about any "yarn" in the textile industry.
Here, we make sweat-bands (for a sporting goods company in Georgia on a private contract,) and i can't remember the thread count on the yarn, it might be 18/1 or maybe 16/1 or 14/1. Most table cloth is made of similar material, woven (Look closely at simones) and is strong.
My guess is "felt" came from the slower cloth that was found on all tables (or almost all) years ago. Most 9ft tables now have the no-nap faster cloth, and most bar tables have the "felt-like" fuzzy cloth.
That is my guess of where it came from. I've seen some of those toy tables (for kids) that actually had felt for the cloth ROFL. I've even played on one with the little ramin cues and mini balls, it's sad.

LOL, Nah, just assume call it that thing that holds the shaft on, If that's what it took to translate It, as long as it serves It's purpose and goes in straight that's all I'm concerned with. Besides i always leave one of those pins in my shirt no matter how many i pull out, always miss one and get stuck, then i got a blood stain on My new shirt. Sometimes no matter how much you analize you still get stuck, believe Me I know, almost wrote the book on It. But then again might learn a new method to get that stain out, make a fortune selling the secret, and make It all worth while. you can find something good or bad in anything, but your still rolling the dice, as to if It will make any difference at all. A friend and I were really bored one day and got tired of calling cues ...cues. It's just too noticible to those who don't know us! So we started calling pool cues.... our "Bling"!

I forgot about the Bling Avitar! I think his old man helped fund the pin to be honest! I've seen guys in pool halls dressed like that on days that weren't Halloween! Don't remember how much they were playin' for, but I will always remember the yellow pimp suit! And I still think with so many people looking for flashy cues, maybe "Bling" is kinda appropriate!
