Why is it so hard for league players to recognize bad hits?

It seems every week I get in multiple arguments with the other team about a hit that was clearly bad but the other shooter/team somehow didn't see it (maybe "didn't see it" should be in quotation marks?). I just don't get whats so hard about recognizing the fact the fact the wrong ball was hit first. I have 20/20 vision from LASIK but are peoples eyes really that bad? Frustrated.

Somebody in the room must have an iPhone 5 or 6? Get them to film it in slow-mo video....and you can easily see the hit.

I am going to assume these are not "obvious" fouls and were going to be close no matter what.

I would recommend 3 things:
1.) If it is clearly going to be close and not obvious as to which ball is going to be struck first, get someone that is independent to watch the shoot. In APA, if you don't ask the shot goes to the shooter. However, if you do ask someone to watch what they say goes.
2.) Learn what a double hit looks like (cue ball travels as fast as the object ball / goes beyond tangent line immediately)
3.) Learn the tangent path of the good hit after impact. The cue ball will certainly follow it by the time it hits any close ball which will then have it's own tangent line. Hitting the wrong ball first will be the only thing that changes that.

If you do #2 or #3, you can say before anyone even shoots if the cue ball ends up over here it was a bad hit.

Sometimes having that knowledge and sharing it with them will help teach them the proper things to look for themselves. That is, if they really care to.

Hope this isn't considered off topic but a question for you guys and gals that have played longer..

How do you approach an opponent about a bad hit or double hit? I seen a guy do it twice last week and just let it go. He wasn't that great, obviously didn't know the rules well but it was an obvious double hit to me and I know if I had said something he would have no idea what I was talking about. Should I have explained afterwards, called the foul and explain or how should I handle it?

This was just during league and I don't care all that much about league.

Double hits are pretty easy to determine most times because 1 of 2 things or a combination of both will happen.

1.) The cue ball will go right after the object ball at almost the same speed if not faster.
2.) The cue ball will not go down the tangent line for more than a millisecond or 2 which you wont see, but you will see the cue ball go way ahead of the tangent line.

To those that may claim well it was a straight on shot that I hit with lots of top on so of course those 2 things happen I say this.... where was the pause or momentary stop of the cue ball when it hit the object ball that occurred before the top set in to take it forward at an ever increasing speed? It is like spinning your tires from a stop. At first your tires are spinning and creating nothing but smoke but slowly they gain more traction and the car gains more speed forward.

It doens't take good eyes to recognize bad hits, it take knowledge, understanding, and honesty. The honesty thing is tough to change, but for people who want or need the knowledge and understanding, the videos and resources on the following page can be extremely helpful:

first-contact legal hit detection

double hit detection and avoidance

Pool Rules Quiz

I wish every league players (and refs) were required to view these videos and resources. If that were the case, there would most certainly be better calls and fewer arguments.

Regards,
Dave

Dr. Dave, It seems like everyone wants to argue about, take photos, etc., but no one has commented on your illustrations and test. It is so simple, a real eye opener. Someone please watch his video and make a comment.

dude im a league player and i was offended when i read this. i play very well and probably better than a lot of "non league players" and league players. i have good eyes. (almost 20/20) and i can see a bad hit just a good. well maybe not all the time but sometimes theres smoke or loud music, etc. but come on man. lousy post. us league players can see just fine dont get too upset. keep on keepin on

bless america
