Why is tourney food so expensive?

Attended our State bar box 8ball tourney last weekend & it was held in a sports arena that had in house vendors. For the Mrs. & me to eat a very meager Subway meal cost $20! Yup, we each had a cold 6" sandwich & two waters. Total--------$19+! Over the course of the tourney (two days) we spent close to $100 just on food & drinks. They had a very strict NO food or beverage into the arena policy. Strictly enforced, including searches upon entry & if any food or container other than sold by in house vendors was spotted, it was confiscated & disposed of . I looked around & could not even spot a water fountain tho someone said there is one somewhere. They shut off all vending machines. Water was $3.50. I spose they had to pay the rent somehow. I would'nt care if I was to attend a ball game for an hour or two but at this tourney we had a difficult time getting away for any length of time. Nothing was within close walking distance & I did'nt want to sit in a cold car either. Maybe it's just the price I have to pay to be able to play.

Man I'm glad I don't live in your state! I'd never attend another one if it were set up like that.

That sucks. I have been to events like that. It makes it hard for you to want to go back.
There is a monthly tournament in Macon, GA and they make a good home cooked style meal for everyone free of charge. I think it's a great treat for the players and everyone appreciates it.

I agaree

I am all for people making money but when it is blatant gouging of the public, it really upsets me too. You would be amazed at how many venues are like this. Baseball, football, basketball, trade shows, gun shows, pool tournaments etc. It is a crying shame.

Not only is the food over priced, but usually over cooked and virtually tasteless or tastes bad.
And when the idiots that price gouge, find that they are also poor planners and run out of the basics... cups or napkins or condiments, it is all someone else's fault.
Then they close up and go home and there is still, at least, 6 hours of tournament play.

You must use your ninja skillz to get the food in. At the last APA tourn held at the fair grounds they were charging $7 for a can of bud light. You would break you bank drinking crappy beer.

It was kind of like that at Midwest last year. They barely had anything, what they did have was overpriced, and no outside food allowed. I showed them, I just drank beer all day!

This is why, whenever we would go to some event, that we would have a cooler with drinks and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches all wrapped up and ready to go, waiting in the car.

Buddy would come up to me and be like..."Toss me the keys", and i'd give him the keys, he'd go out, and munch, and come back.

Now i'm sure that there are people who think that this might be slumming.
But if your going to go to an event, and go broke trying to make the cash, what the heck was the reason for it all anyway?

It was all about profit.

As for attending an event to watch?

That's a different story as you are there to enjoy yourself.
But a $3.50 bottle of water?

Um, NO.
Bye bye tournament. I'll go home and watch some TV.

One year awhile back our state tournament did this, im pretty sure ever single person complained, yelled and cursed everyone who was working there.

Next year prices were back down to a normal rate.

I'm of two minds about this.....I'm a big fan of supporting venues that support pool.....for a tourney where greens fees are covered, I like to support the bar with some food and beer purchases, especially with added money.....

But $7 for a beer, or $3.50 for a bottle of water, or $20 for Subway.....that is unreal....somebody at work earlier was saying that Six Flags here in Arlington is working to get approval to serve liquor....nothing better than a $15 crown and coke :D

I agree

We find too much of this kind of gouging in a lot of venues....Even at your local movie theater. We usually try to sneak food in, but it will depend on how aggressively they enforce the "captive audience" rules. I agree they have to make money, but gouging people for crappy food is just too blatant for me. I like the idea someone put out about packing your own food and drink and keeping a cooler ready in your car.

wahcheck

yea, I dont know why places do crap like that,,, do they not realize they will generally make the same amount of money buy selling thier products at a normal price??????

as for movie Theaters, F them!!!!!!!!!! I mean i know they dont make crap from selling tickets and thier money is all from pop/popcorn and candy, but WTF, the theater in my poo dunk town charges 7.50 for a large popcorn and pop is 5.50$ and this is in a small town.....

I generally take the 30min drive to another town to thier theater cuz its nicer, and the prices are cheaper so i generally end up spending the same!

I feel relieved at the prices at our APA Cities...

Bottle of Yuengling: $3.00
Can of Modeleo: $1.00
20oz Bottle of soda: $1.50

I didn't buy any food, so don't recall those prices exactly, but they were around $5 for a burger and fries...
